The Wolverine: First Look

Brace yourself, Bub! Feast yourself on the First Look at The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman flexing his adamantium while pumping his veins in a bad-ass shot.

We were originally all hopeful and pumped up for The Wolverine after hearing news of Darren Aronofsky, the renowned film-maker that brought us Requiem of a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan, joining the production back in October 2010. And we weren't alone in our anticipation. Hugh Jackman himself can't conceal his enthusiasm too, "This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one, I hope... Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different. This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He’s kind of dark... But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, has written the script, so that’ll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky’s] going to make it fantastic. There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure.” Yeah, right. Until Aronofsky bails out due to family commitment and effectively sealing the accursed fate of good ol' Logan's silver screen adaptation after Gavin Hood and 20th Century Fox successfully screwed up the franchise for good with the abysmal "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" back in 2009.

Along came James Mangold, a film-maker who is similar with Aronofsky in the fact that both exhibit amazing range in their choice of work though I have to say that the general standards of Mangold's works fluctuate more than a little from one film to the other. The director that brought you the multi-Academy Award-nominated biographical film on Johnny Cash, "Walk the Line", and the outstanding Western, "3:10 to Yuma", is incidentally also the one who unleashed "Day and Knight". With all said and done, we are still quite hopeful with The Wolverine. After all, this might be the last and best shot for the franchise although we can always slot Jackman's Wolverine into the X-Men: Days of Future Past.

And now, without further ado, hit the jump to check out the first official image of Jackman flexing both his adamantium claws and his insanely ripped physique in his fifth outing as Logan, The Wolverine, courtesy of The Wolverine Twitter account.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

The Wolverine is currently scheduled to be released on July 26, 2013.
