The Lone Ranger: First Trailer

Posted by Grey Tuesday, October 2, 2012

"A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty "Hi-ho, Silver, away!" The Lone Ranger!"

Hold your horses, Ke-mo sah-bee! Here's our first good look at Gore Verbinski's upcoming film adaptation of The Lone Ranger with the release of the first trailer from Disney.

Earlier this year, we have had a unexpected First Look at The Lone Ranger thanks to  producer Jerry Bruckheimer who officially unveiled the first image from the film via his Twitter account. Directed by Gore Verbinsky, the modern retelling of the adventures of the eponymous iconic American Old West hero with both Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp in the roles of respectively, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, we were decidedly enthusiastic about the film given the consistent quality of the team of Verbinsky and Depp with their collaborative work on the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy as well as the successful animation feature film, Rango.

With the film's tumultuous production process being well-documented after alternating between development hell and green-lit project repeatedly, we are already happy enough that it was successfully pulled off after all. Disney has recently released the first trailer, poster along with some pretty nifty official set images from the film. The trailer looked decidedly fun and we opine that we are in for one hell of an intriguing take on the Old West this side of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained

With no further ado, hit the jump for some good ol' Western-style swashbuckling action with the first trailer (head over to Apple for the HD version).

The first poster of the film.

For those wondering how Johnny Depp's take of Tonto got such a major facelift (apart from the most important and obvious reason that the role is played by Johnny Depp himself), the quirky actor has actually took the time and effort in explaining the inspiration behind the updated look of the Native American sidekick in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

"I’d actually seen a painting by an artist named Kirby Sattler, and looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That’s it. The stripes down the face and across the eyes … it seemed to me like you could almost see the separate sections of the individual, if you know what I mean… There’s this very wise quarter, a very tortured and hurt section, an angry and rageful section, and a very understanding and unique side. I saw these parts, almost like dissecting a brain, these slivers of the individual. That makeup inspired me.

As for the psychedelic headdress that is in essence a dead crow, Depp further elaborated:

It just so happened Sattler had painted a bird flying directly behind the warrior’s head. It looked to me like it was sitting on top. I thought: Tonto’s got a bird on his head. It’s his spirit guide in a way. It’s dead to others, but it’s not dead to him. It’s very much alive."

And to illuminate Depp's vision, here's the painting by Kirby Sattler, "I Am Crow". Incidentally, the look of the art has been licensed to the film-makers by the artist.

For more on the new-and-improved Tonto, head over to Entertainment Weekly to check out the full interview.

And here are some of the exciting official set images released by Disney.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

“The Lone Ranger” is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carte, The Lone Ranger is currently scheduled for an open date on July 3, 2013.
