This Halloween... Room 237: First Look

Posted by Grey Thursday, October 25, 2012

This Halloween... we take a return trip back to the most terrifying room in the infamous Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror epic film, The Shinning, with this First Look at Room 237, one of the most acclaimed films on the year.

Earlier this month, we reported on the scheduled release of Doctor Sleep, legendary horror writer Stephen King's sequel to his 1977 horror classic that was later adapted by equally legendary film-maker Stanley Kubrick in 1980 into a film that till today still found its way into most film critics' all-time horror favourites. While there is no doubt that the original novel is a masterpiece in itself, it is no an undeniable fact that it is the critically acclaimed adaptation by Stanley Kubrick that gave the title the legendary status today regardless of the well-documented row between Kubrick and King.

While news of the release of the sequel next year is exemplary of the film (and novel)'s iconic status in the horror genre, it is when a film such as Room 237 that comes along and readjusted how we should view the original 1980 film. Literally. Directed by Rodney Ascher, Room 237 is a documentary where a group of experts on Kubrick's works assembled to analyse the perceived hidden messages behind the film in a frame-by-frame re-examination. From camera movement, art decors, to hidden symbols, the film was both an analysis at the film and more intriguingly, an analysis on the obsession of critics and fans when a manic search in support for a thesis go way too far.

The documentary premièred  in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was later screened at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival to great reception. Have your first look at the questions the film will be asking in the trailer right after the jump. Do note that there are no footages from The Shinning in the trailer perhaps for some copyrights issues.

Here's the official description of the documentary feature:
