Skyfall: Final Preview

Posted by Grey Thursday, November 8, 2012

The new-age, grim-and-gritty Agent 007 is back after an unexpectedly lengthy hiatus.

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond, in critically acclaimed film-maker Sam Mendes' Skyfall, one of the most anticipated 007 films in history . The Daily Zombies takes a final glimpse at the twenty-third James Bond film ahead of its US release tomorrow.

Come tomorrow, the evolution of the new age Agent 007 continues as Daniel Craig, in his third outing as the tough-as-nails, ass-kicking James Bond for the new generation, joins Academy Awards-winning director Sam Mendes in one of the most anticipated 007 films in history, Skyfall.

Apart from the much-celebrated participation from Mendes, the anticipation behind Skyfall is also due to the unexpected lengthy hiatus, a result of MGM's financial predicament back in 2010. Following the success of 2008's Quantum of Solace, production of Skyfall begun early 2010 but was suspended after MGM's exit from bankruptcy in December 2010. Intended to be a part of a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Bond film series starting with 1962's Dr. No, MGM, Sony Pictures and the Broccoli family announced 2012 release date of Skyfall.

With the bold choice of director in Sam Mendes whom experiences in action films are relatively next to zero (if you consider 2002's crime epic, Road to Perdition, as an action film), Skyfall looks to be an inspired chapter in the continuing evolution of the 007 mythos which has by now been updated and revitalized with a serious vibe and tone that have been set up in Casino Royale. After all, we are living in the post-Bourne Identity trilogy age and more importantly, according to Mendes, the post-Dark Knight era. In an interview with The Playlist, Mendes touched on the impact of The Dark Knight on Skyfall:

"In terms of what [Nolan] achieved, specifically The Dark Knight, the second movie, what it achieved, which is something exceptional. It was a game changer for everybody.

What Nolan proved was that you can make a huge movie that is thrilling and entertaining and has a lot to say about the world we live in, even if, in the case with The Dark Knight, it’s not even set in our world… That did help give me the confidence to take this movie in directions that, without The Dark Knight, might not have been possible."

Indeed, intelligent films from the likes of Nolan have strengthened arguments from film-makers striving to make darker films when it comes to the blockbuster season. And with Mendes not shying away from the The Dark Knight's influence on Skyfall, we can safely assume a fair amount of justified darkness in Skyfall.

With the reintroduction of a new Q for the new generation in Ben Whishaw, and Javier Bardem stepping in a what appears to be a memorable take of a Bond villain with his role as Raoul Silva, Bond returns with a bang  to further cement the 50-year-old franchise's long-staying power with the audience. The film has since opened in UK to overwhelmingly positive responses with record box office takings with £37.2 million ($59.9 million) for the highest seven-day gross, surpassing previous record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

With that out of the way, we take a look at some of the cool trailers, posters as well as official images from the film.

And here are two cool clips from the film.

With James Bond's alcohol taste taking a turn from a "Martini shaken, not stirred" to Heineken beer in the film franchise's continuing trend of notorious product placement, a cool TV spot has been released with both Daniel Craig and Bond Girl Berenice Marlohe appearing in an action-packed fun ride.

Here's the official synopsis of the film:

Daniel Craig is back as James Bond 007 in Skyfall, the 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time. In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Starring Daniel Craig, Ben Whishaw, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Bérénice Marlohe, and Judi Dench reprising her role as M, Skyfall opens in US on November 9.
