Oblivion: First Look

Posted by Grey Saturday, December 8, 2012

With the release of the first trailer and poster from Universal Pictures, here's your First Look at Oblivion, the upcoming sci-fi film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise.

We have last checked out the ever-diligent Tom Cruise in a robot suit on set in our First look at All You Need Is Killdirector Doug Liman's upcoming live-action adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's Japanese light novel of the same name. One has to ponder Cruise's preferred choice of film choices these days. No, we don't mean that it is questionable or bad in any way at all, given how we here at The Daily Zombies would never get sick of big budget sci-fi epic film with a brain (Cruise has involved himself in undoubtedly some of the best sci-fi films in the past decades) . It's just that Cruise's personal choice of faith just somehow get in the way whenever we try to imagine how he actually felt about the scripts whenever he does those rounds of  promotional interviews for these films.

Today, we find Tom Cruise in yet another big budget sci-fi epic film, Oblivion, a noteworthy sci-fi thriller directed by Joseph Kosinski (who last brought us the somewhat disappointing but visually-pleasing Tron: Legacy) and based on the graphic novel of the same name written by Kosinski himself. Starring Tom Cruise as of the last remaining member of mankind on earth as a drone repairman (some sort of human "Wall-e"), the film appears to be an intriguing mix of mystery and action based on the recently-released trailer.

With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer (head over to Apple to view in HD).

And here are the two recently-released posters that are in fact cuts of the same images. Nonetheless, they are quite a beautiful sight to behold.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion was shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, and Morgan Freeman,  Oblivion is scheduled to be released exclusively in IMAX on APril 12, 2013, followed by its traditional release a week later on April 19, 2013.
