Pacific Rim: First Trailer & New Posters

Posted by Grey Thursday, December 13, 2012

We knew Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming sci-fi film, Pacific Rim, is going to be a big, awesome epic homage to the Kaiju/Mecha culture. We have no idea. Brace yourself for the awe-inspiring first trailer of the film del Toro promised to feature "the finest fucking monsters ever committed to screen".

It has certainly been some time since we last covered Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim in our First Look feature at the ambitious film chronicling the war between giant Mechas and giant Monsters on the streets of Hong Kong, America, and Japan. And yet our enthusiasm for del Toro's "beautiful poem to giant monsters" rages on for the obvious reasons: When was the last time you get to witness a big budget sci-fi film with giant Mechas taking on giant Monsters? We are not talking about the standard issue Japanese Kaiju Eiga  (怪獣映画, giant monster films) or some silly Syfy TV-movie of the week but thoughtful, big-budgeted films featuring your childhood fantasy brought to life. And with visionary film-maker del Toro at helm, we knew very well that we are in for a ride.

When giant monsters known as "Kaiju" emerging from a dimensional rift in the Pacific Rim threatens the existence of mankind, "Jaegers", massive robots controlled by humans emerged as two unlikely heroes, Raleigh Antrobus (Charlie Hunnam from Son of Anarchy) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi from Norwegian Woods and Babel) teamed up to pilot a legendary Jaeger in the final fight for all mankind.

We have earlier thought that the first full theatrical trailer of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel will no doubt be the single most significant film trailer of the week. Eat yer heart, Superman. The most awesome trailer of the week has arrived. First shown at Hall H of San Diego Comic-Con to a rip-roaring reception, hit the jump and brace yourself for the first trailer of easily one of our most anticipated films of 2013 (head over to Apple to check out the trailer in HD).

Yes, you have just witnessed a giant Mecha punching a giant Kaiju in the face. In the grandest way ever. And even the all-evil GLaDOS gets to have a cameo in the film with Ellen McLain, the award-winning voice actress behind the villainous A.I. of the Portal video game series portraying the A.I. voice of  one of the Jaegers.

Courtesy of Collider, here are some of the selected screen captures from the astounding trailer.

Here are the new posters for the film that have been recently released by Legendary Pictures.

The promotional campaign for the film has in fact gained momentum back in November when it took on the viral marketing approach. The blueprints of five Jaegers, namely Gipsy Danger, Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha, Striker Eureka and Coyote Tango were unveiled earlier. Hit the jump to check them out.

Here's the official synopsis from the film:

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Del Toro’s behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

Slated for release in Summer 2013, “Pacific Rim” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi , Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman, Pacific Rim is set to open in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 12, 2013.
