Star Trek Into Darkness: First Poster

Posted by Grey Sunday, December 2, 2012

The first Star Trek into Darkness poster has arrived. Witness how this poster surprised in more ways than one and be astounded by our first glimpse into the much anticipated film.

We all know by now that Star Trek Into Darkness, director J. J. Abrams' upcoming follow-up to 2009's Star Trek, his successful reboot of the Star Trek franchise, will be hitting the theatres come May 2013 and that the film will neither be carrying the Roman numeral following the title (like how the original film series is like) nor the colon (like how The Next Generations film series is like), but that's probably the only thing we know that are set in stones. Until now.

Actor Simon Pegg, who is playing Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the film, has been "beaming up" many revealing details on the film from his Twitter account. The fan-favourite actor has previously unveiled the somewhat unexpected title, and now, lo and behold, the first stunning poster of Star Trek Into Darkness. With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the poster that is shocking in more ways than one.

So why exactly are we calling this poster stunning in more ways than one? Let's do a quick rundown:

1. First of all, the poster featured none of the crew members of the Enterprise. Pretty bold move in the history of the franchise.

2. Benedict Cumberbatch's involvement in the film as the antagonist is undoubtedly the single most talked-about subject on the film and with this poster, it shows. Cumberbatch's villain standing over a pile of rubble and ruins looking over a severely ravaged London. One can certainly see the connection here with Sherlock himself looking over London in ruins.

3. The poster is also stunningly familiar. Fans have called this "Star Trek Into Dark Knight Rises." Not without reason.

With the destruction of the buildings forming into the shape of the Starfleet insignia, one is immediately reminded of Christopher Nolan's epic conclusion of his Dark Knight trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises.

4. No matter how you think of this poster, original or not, it is an eye-catching one.

With the marketing campaign kicking into high gear now, Simon Pegg has revealed via his Twitter that the first trailer for the film will be arriving online this Thursday. It has also been previously reported that the first theatrical trailer will be attached to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey while the film's first nine minutes will be shown ahead of IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In short, get ready to boldly go where no one go before for a couple more times during this festive season.

And here’s the recently unveiled official synopsis for the film:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Is Cumberbatch the "one man weapon of mass destruction" described in the synopsis, further identifying him as the much-rumoured role of Gary Mitchell. Here are some leaked set photos courtesy of MTV and Trek Movies.

Directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci, Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Star Trek Into Darkness is currently scheduled to open in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013.
