Byzantium: First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by Grey Monday, February 4, 2013

This Undead Monday, we take a First Look at a new vampire film by Neil Jordan, the Irish film-maker who brought us 1994's Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, the film that first catapulted Brad Pitt to massive stardom in Hollywood.

Award-winning director Neil Jordan has been well-known for many things but one would certainly expect not much of an argument if we were to suggest that the Irish film-maker has been mostly recognized for being the director behind 1994's Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, a film adaptation of Anne Rice's iconic vampire novel. Notable for its perceived status of catapulting Brad Pitt to his now mega-successful Hollywood iconic status, the film was memorable for its handling of the vampire subject.

Now almost two decades later, the industry, having seen the rise of the Twilight film franchise as well as the impressive Let the Right One In (as well as the Hollywood version, Let Me In), Neil Jordan is back with yet another vampire film chronicling the exploits of two lost vampires. Before you start to let your mind run wild and get into all kinds of comparable points to Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise's take on Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt, respectively, we actually have two vampire ladies, Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan, as mother-and-daughter duo of Clara and Eleanor Webb.

With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the first trailer from the film.

And here's the first poster for the film.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Eleanor and Clara, two mysterious and penniless young women, flee the scene of a violent crime and arrive in a run-down coastal resort. They try to find money and refuge along the tawdry seafront and in the dilapidated hotels.

Clara, ever-practical, sells her body. She soon meets shy and lonely Noel, who provides a roof over their heads in his seedy guesthouse, Byzantium. Clara, always looking towards the future, turns it into a ‘pop-up’ brothel.

Meanwhile Eleanor, the eternal schoolgirl, meets Frank, a kindred spirit who unwittingly prompts her to tell the truth about her life. She tells him that Clara is her mother; yet Clara is only a few years older. She says that she was born in 1804; yet she is just sixteen. She confesses that she must drink human blood to stay alive – and so must her mother. In the small, quiet town, people start to die.

The past that the girls have been running from for so long, finally catches up with them – with astonishing consequences.
