Iron Man 3: Super Bowl TV Spot, Poster & Images

Posted by Grey Sunday, February 3, 2013

It's that time of the year again. The relentless marketing machine for the most anticipated films of 2013 has been unleashed on the highly-coveted Super Bowl commercial airtime as we take a closer look at Marvel Studios' first entry of the Phase Two of their highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe: Iron Man 3.

Super Bowl is once again upon us, and the marketing juggernaut simply cannot be denied in its warpath as marketing departments behind the major film releases of the year worked overnight to churn out their respective best shots in enticing audiences of quite possibly the most-viewed television event of the year. For non-football-fans like us here at The Daily Zombies, the annual event would only translate into a great opportunity for movie geeks like us to check out the trailers for the mostly hotly anticipated films in 2013. First up, we have an extended clip of the TV spot for Iron Man 3.

We have earlier witnessed the deconstruction of Tony Stark and Iron Man in the first trailer of Iron Man 3, the seventh instalment of Marvel Cinematic Universe directed by Shane Black who has also described his take as a "technological crisis thriller." In this special trailer, Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr. gives a tongue-in-cheek jab at the conventions of an extended trailer before introducing the actual 30-second TV spot.

And for those who would like to get into the action immediately, hit the jump for the actual TV spot.

In related news, Downey Jr. commented on the involvement of Shane Black in the production of the Iron Man franchise as early as the first film in an interview at the 24 Hour Cinefamily Telethon (via ComicBook Movie):

When we were doing the first Iron Man, Jon Favreau and I used to call up Shane Black. We had two lifeline calls; one was to J.J. Abrams, which was about the third act [of Iron Man]. And for the other call, we went to Shane’s house. We couldn’t afford him, so in exchange for helping us with a few key scenes, he asked for a piece of Salmon and fresh blueberries. For instance, in the Iron Man scene where Tony Stark comes back from captivity and calls a press conference, and then asked everybody to sit down, the speech Stark gives all came from Shane Black. So to get him to do Iron Man 3, it has just been this awesome experience and one of my favorite working experiences. Iron Man 3 is going to be a very, very bold genre film, from the storytelling.

As for the involvement of Jon Favreau in Iron Man 3 in his role as Happy Hogan, Downey Jr. has this to say:

Happy has an amazing arc in this movie. In fact, probably the best two bits of acting in the movie, so far from what I can tell…which sucks because I’m in every frame, are Favreau as Happy Hogan…I can’t give away much, but it’s ridiculous.

Here's the new poster released by Marvel to coincide the release of the Super Bowl TV spot. We can see the theme of the fall of Iron Man is still in play here with Tony Stark on a free-fall with his armour disintegrating. Hit the jump for the poster as well as the widescreen wallpaper of the same image.

Earlier during the Christmas season, Marvel has unveiled a Christmas-themed image for the holiday.

A publicity photo with the commencement of the shooting in China. Wang Xueqi plays Doctor Wu (not the earlier rumoured Doctor Chen Lu, the character that will eventually become the Radioactive Man in the comics).

And finally, new images from the Super Bowl TV spot.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of Tales of Suspense (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with The Invincible Iron Man (#1) in May of 1968. Iron Man 3 is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Directed by Shane Black, Iron Man 3 features an all-star cast with Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rebecca Hall, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, and Guy Pearce. Iron Man 3 is currently scheduled to open internationally in IMAX 3D theatres on April 25th with a domestic release on May 3rd, 2013.
