The King of Pigs: First Look

Posted by Grey Sunday, February 17, 2013

Behold, our first potential contender for the animation of the year, South Korean's The King of Pigs, no doubt one of the darkest animations we have ever cast our eyes upon.

The winner of three awards at the 2011 Busan International Film Festival (CGV Movie Collage Award, DGK Directors Award, and the NETPAC, Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema, Award), The King of Pigs has won numerous accolades since its original première at the Busan International Film Festival as well as its screening at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

With a darkly animated aesthetic style reminiscent of the late great Satoshi Kon, director Yeun Sang-Ho tells a disturbing tale of discrimination among classes in modern Korean society. A brief snapshot of the animation's plot synopsis as well as the film's first trailer confirms a darkly tale set to shock everyone in the vein of South Korean classic film, Old Boy.

With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer, the posters, as well as the earlier-mentioned plot synopsis.

The posters released thus far.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

This brilliant feature animation premiered at the 2011 Busan International Film Festival and may finally end Korea's reputation of being a country that only creates outsourced animation projects from other countries and never produces its own.

Two men who went to school together meet again while living very different lives. At school they were plagued by class status wars where those unlucky enough to be at the bottom were 'pigs'. But are they better than beasts now? What happened to them back then and what have those circumstances created today?

This animation pushes boundaries further than any live-action feature ever could. More information and stills are available on the official Kobiz site:
