Batman: Arkham Origins - First Look

Posted by Grey Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Dark Knight from the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City video games returns... with Warner Bros. Games Montreal taking over Rocksteady Studios as the developer. The Daily Zombies take a First Look at Batman: Arkham Origins.

It goes without saying that here at The Daily Zombies, we are big fans of Rocksteady Studios' genre-defining take on incidentally our favourite superhero of them all, Batman, with their critically acclaimed video game titles in 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum and 2011's Batman: Arkham City. Batman: Arkham Asylum went on to be our Game of the Year 2009 while Batman: Arkham City is undoubtedly our Game of the Year 2011 and was not documented so only due to our absent entry on 2011.

With that out of the way, one can easily imagine the considerable frustration and puzzlement we felt when it was announced that Batman: Arkham Origins, the previously-rumoured prequel to the first two Arkham titles set to hit every video game stores on October 25 this year, will have Warner Bros. Games Montreal replacing Rocksteady Studios as the developer. After all, Rocksteady's valiant efforts in proving that comic book properties can be done the right way in video games have been inspiring to so many out there. With Warner Bros. Games Montreal familiarized with the custom modified Unreal Engine 3 development engine utilized by Rocksteady Studios for the Arkham titles thanks to their earlier work on the Wii U adaptation of Batman: Arkham City, we can only hope that they can lived up to the reputation held by Rocksteady.

As mentioned earlier,  Batman: Arkham Origins will be a prequel taking place several years before Batman: Arkham Asylum with a young, unrefined Batman encountering supervillains for the first time. Here's a snap synopsis of the title courtesy of the official press release:

"Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.

Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight.

As the story unfolds, witness identities being formed and key relationships being forged."

Thanks to Game Informer, who will be featuring Batman: Arkham Origins front and center on their May issue, we have a more comprehensive look at the plot of the new title.

Set on Christmas Eve, Batman, who is in his early career, has made a name for himself in the underworld of Gotham, and the top mob boss Black Mask is making his unhappiness felt over the rise of the Dark Knight by putting on a bounty on his head. Batman has to win over his allies in Captain James Gordon and the Gotham City Police Department while finding out the truth behind Black Mask's plan as he takes on hordes of supervillains the likes of Deathstroke the Terminator,  Alberto Falcone, and the return of the Penguin. Players will be able to explore both the ‘Old Gotham’ as well as the ‘New Gotham’, with numerous new gameplay elements mixed with the tried-and-true features of the franchise.

And if you are still upset over the takeover by Warner Bros. Games Montreal, the news that creative director Eric Holmes, known for his work as the lead designer of open world titles like The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype is something positive for you to take in for now.

Interestingly, the first handheld title in the franchise will be accompanying the official multi-platform release of Batman: Arkham Origins on Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Entitled Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, the reported 2.5-D Metroid-style exploration action title is currently under development at Armature, the studio behind the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PlayStation Vita. A direct sequel of Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is obviously set at the Blackgate Penitentiary with Batman venturing to the facility to halt a prison uprising. The title is currently scheduled to be released on PlayStation Vita and 3DS on the same day.
