R.I.P.D. : First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by Grey Monday, April 22, 2013

This Undead Monday, we take a First Look at R.I.P.D., Universal's upcoming supernatural action comedy based on the original comic book series of the same name published by Dark Horse.

Published by Dark Horse Entertainment in 2001, R.I.P.D. (an abbreviation of the organization featuring the protagonists of the story, Rest In Peace Department) was created by TV/film writer-producer Peter M. Lenkov and has understandably gathered a cult following given its nifty mix of supernatural action and comedy surrounding its budding protagonists, newly-dead cop Nick Cruz Walker and his veteran partner, Roy Pulsipher, a law enforcer from the Old West. Both members of the eponymous organization, the two heroes have to do the obligatory hero thing by saving the world from evil spirits while staying in the shadows of mankind.

While the plot of the comic book has its similarity with the Man In Black concept of covert unit with nameless operators saving the world from evil forces unknown by the general public, it was picked up by Universal and will be hitting the big screens soon enough on July 19, 2013. Featuring Ryan Reynolds as Nick Cruz Walker and the inspired casting of Jeff Bridges as Roy Pulsipher, the first trailer of the film directed by Robert Schwentke has arrived.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, which has its moments with the suitably adorable Mary Louise-Parker's role of Proctor as well as the humorous covert identities (which we can already imagined to be a running gag throughout the film) that both heroes employed.

And here are the first banner and poster released for the film.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.

Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous spirits who are cleverly disguised as ordinary people.  His mission?  To arrest and bring to justice a special brand of criminals trying to escape final judgment by hiding among the unsuspecting on Earth.

Once the wise-cracking Roy is assigned former rising-star detective Nick Walker (Reynolds) as his junior officer, the new partners have to turn grudging respect into top-notch teamwork.  When they uncover a plot that could end life as we know it, two of R.I.P.D.’s finest must miraculously restore the cosmic balance…or watch the tunnel to the afterlife begin sending angry souls the very wrong way.

Also starring Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Marissa Miller, and James Hong.  R.I.P.D. is currently set to open in 3D on July 19, 2013.
