Metallica: Through the Never - First Look

Posted by Grey Sunday, May 26, 2013

Hitting the big screens this August, we take a First Look at Metallica: Through the Never with the release of the first trailer of the 3D IMAX concert film featuring the legendary heavy metal band.

"All that is, ever
Ever was
Will be ever
Twisting
Turning

Through the never"

"Through the Never" might be considered by many to be just another one of the B-side track of one of the best-selling albums in history, Metalica, the eponymous fifth studio album of the legendary heavy metal band (also affectionately known as the black album), but come this Summer, Through the Never takes on a special meaning as the title of the first 3D IMAX concert film featuring Metallica. Directed by Nimród Antal, the writer-director behind 2010's Predators, the film will be comprising both concert footage from a set of concerts held in 2012 as well as a surreal adventure starring Dane DeHaan (the creepy kid from Chronicle and Harry Osborn in the upcoming sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man) as a band crew member on an urgent mission that develop into a set of catastrophic circumstances.

In an interview with Collider, DeHaan described the unique film in a nutshell:

“It’s in a way like a 3D concert movie but there’s also this narrative that ties together all the footage.  It’s gonna be, first of all, really rock and roll and really ‘Metallica’ for lack of a better word; they don’t hold back at all.  But during the concert I basically go on this trip as a roadie for the band and I pretty much literally have to go through hell and back to take it back to them, and all of this is going on during the concert so it all ties together really kind of beautifully and uniquely.  It’s unlike anything that I’ve ever seen before; it’s almost like a concert movie meets The Wallmeets Metallica… We filmed it last August.”

The film will first be released in IMAX theaters in August, followed by its official release in normal theaters in 3D.

While Through the Never is not in my opinion anywhere near the Top 13 Metallica Track Ever (gotta work on that list some time in the future), it was put into great effect in the trailer which translated the impressive scope of the concert film. Without further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Starring Metallica, a cast of thousands of their fans and breakout star Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Metallica Through the Never is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Nimrod Antal (Predators, Kontroll) and produced by former IMAX film producer Charlotte Huggins (Journey to the Center of the Earth). The film marries groundbreaking footage and editing techniques with a compelling narrative, in which a band crew member (played by DeHaan) is sent out on a mission during Metallica’s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena. While on this mission, he unexpectedly has his life turned completely upside down.
