Madness? This is Sparta

Skeptical over the necessity of  300: Rise of an Empire, the prequel/sequel to the 2007 film that made Zack Snyder's career? Legendary Pictures has released the first trailer for the film and brace yourself for all the elaborate bloodletting and lyrical exposition one has come to expect here.

Back in April, we had our First Look at 300: Rise of an Empire, the upcoming film serving as a prequel/sequel to 300, the hit 2007 film that despite its controversy, catapulted Zack Snyder's Hollywood career sky-high that we get to enjoy both epic trainwrecks like Sucker Punch and successful (debatably so, I must add) mega-franchise reboot like the recently-released Man of Steel. With 300: Rise of an Empire, director Noam Murro will both be covering Xerxes (Frank Miller's follow-up to his Eisner Awards-winning comic book series that inspired the first film) as well as several other battlegrounds during that period with Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton's Themistocles, and Eva Green's Artemisia as the new protagonist and antagonist, respectively.

With the release of the first trailer from Legendary Pictures, we understand that Queen Gorgo of Sparta is back to her ass-kicking business (as one would expect from the impeccable Lena Headey) while giving us an awe-inspiring narrative. With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer.

And here's the new poster featuring Sullivan Stapleton's Themistocles getting ready for a bloodbath.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
“300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

300: Rise of an Empire is currently scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on March 7, 2014.
