The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - First Look

Posted by Grey Sunday, June 16, 2013

The return Journey to Middle-earth was Unexpected. And now, it's going to get Desolated. With the second chapter of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy hitting the screens in December, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first trailer of  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

While Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is undoubtably a hit at the box office, there have been ongoing debates on its use of high frame rate technology and an unabashedly drawn-out storyline, we here at The Daily Zombies went in with reasonably adjusted expectation and was pleasantly surprised by the visual treat complete with a mostly earnest adventure one can expect from the acclaimed New Zealand film-maker. Unfortunately for the naysayers of the first film, we can expect more of the same from The Desolation of Smaug, the second chapter of the trilogy. In fact, get ready for more additional characters and further drawn-out storylines that are not in the original 1937 novel written by the legendary J. R. R. Tolkien.

With the unveiling of the first trailer set to accompany the release of Warner Bros. Pictures' other tentpole film, Man of Steel, we are further enticed by what we have witnessed. With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer.

And here are the official images released thus far for the film.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

"The Desolation of Smaug," the second chapter of The Hobbit Trilogy, is scheduled to open on December 13, 2013, while the concluding chapter, "There and Back Again," will be released on July 18, 2014.
