Spike Lee’s Oldboy: First Look

Posted by Grey Wednesday, July 17, 2013

It is here. The Hollywood remake we have been dreading about. We take a First Look at Spike Lee's take on one of the films that has always been on our all-time favorite list... Oldboy.

For the record, we here at The Daily Zombies have never caught on with the Korean pop culture craze that have swept the world over in its delirious madness no matter if we are talking about cheesy Korean pop songs, drama series, or the many pop idols it has created. Nevertheless, we will be the first to admit that cinema in South Korea has indeed been prosperous with creativity given the waves of talented film-makers we have seen thus far. Among the many highlights of South Korean cinema, Park Chan-wook's 2003 Oldboy, and Bong Jong-ho's 2006 The Host, are without a doubt the cream of the crop.

In Oldboy, Park Chan-wook's 2003 live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name, we witnessed an immense theatrical presentation of the dark depths of the human heart complete with an absolutely stunning ending that broke the hearts of the audience. And now, with the inevitable Hollywood remake in our immediate horizon, we are understandably dreadful to expect what is to come. Along came Spike Lee who somehow elevate the film's prospects ever so slightly given its doomed potential. Ever so slightly.

And now, with the release of the first trailer by FilmDistrict, here's our First Look at the film. For those who are as skeptical as we are here, hit the jump to check out the trailer and see if you share our indifferent view.

And here are the posters released for the film thus far.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

Rated R, Oldboy is currently scheduled to open on October 25, 2013.
