Yurusarezaru Mono 許されざる者: First Look

Clint Eastwood's epic revisionist take on Old West gets a Japanese remake in Lee Sang-il (李相日)'s Yurusarezaru Mono (許されざる者) AKA Unforgiven.

The winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman), and Best Film Editing, Unforgiven is undoubtedly our favorite Western film here at The Daily Zombies and more importantly, it opened up our eyes for Clint Eastwood's films, changing our impression of the film-maker forever. An intriguing point to note here would be the fact that Unforgiven is in fact a very well-executed revisionist take on the Old West trope and to a certain extent, a study on violence in cinema.

The similarities between Western and Japan's Jidaigeki have been pretty much well-documented with Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai effortlessly translated into The Magnificient Seven way back. With Yurusarezaru Mono (許されざる者), zainichi Korean film-maker Lee Sang-il (李相日) take on Unforgiven as he implanted the original Old West setting into the turbulous early era of Japan's Meiji Era and guess what... It fits like a glove with Ken Watanabe as Jubei Kamata, the Japanese version of William Munny, Koichi Sato as Little Bill Daggett, andAkira Emoto as Ned Logan.

With no further ado, hit the jump for the trailer for Yurusarezaru Mono (許されざる者) AKA Unforgiven.

Posters released for the film thus far.

Courtesy of Twitch, here's a quick synopsis of the film:

The action is now set in late 1800′s Hokkaido with the lead actor Ken Watanabe playing a long retired samurai drawn back into action by the combination of poverty and a large bounty, at a time when Japan largely abandons the old ways to adopt a more modern stance.
