Her: First Look

Imagine falling in love with Siri, but one with the sexy voice of Scarlett Johansson? Acclaimed film-maker Spike Jonze is back with a thought-provoking film with an outlandish premise in Her.

With all respects to Siri, Apple's very intelligent personal assistant for their iOS, it has been the source of countless jokes, both vulgar and not. Okay, most vulgar ones. But with that said, not many knew that Siri means "beautiful woman who leads you to victory" in Norwegian.

In acclaimed film-maker Spike Jonze's latest film, the AI for an operating system is the focus. Or rather, the love story between an AI and a lonely writer is the focus and this ain't no Adam Sandler-style slapstick comedy. Joaquin Phoenix is the lonely writer saddled with a sad history and a solitary existence until he falls in love with the AI of his brand-new operating system, voiced by none other than Scarlett Johansson. Given the fact that this Spike Jonze at helm, we all knew how the quirky film will somehow lead us through an insightful examination on love and human nature. Pretty heavy stuff, eh? Exactly what we expect from the auteur director.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Set in the Los Angeles of the slight future, “Her” follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.

From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.

Featuring a star-studded cast of Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and the voice of Scarlett Johansson, Spike Jonze's Her is currently scheduled for a limited theatrical release in December.
