Kick-Ass 2: Final Preview

Posted by Grey Thursday, August 15, 2013

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kick-Ass and Chloe Grace Moretz’s Hit Girl return to take on Christopher Mintz-Plasse's Chris D'Amico AKA Red Mist AKAThe Mother Fucker in Kick-Ass 2, the sequel to 2010's Kick-Ass. The Daily Zombies takes a final look at the film ahead of its global release this weekend.

First and foremost, we have to recognize that Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.'s Kick-Ass series is destined to be a different animal from the regular comic books from the get-go. Only by acknowledging this fact, we can move on to appraise the series and by extension, the subject of our preview, the film adaptation of the volume two of the series: Kick-Ass 2.

No matter if you want to perceive it as exploitation of excessive violence or a parody examination in violence in our culture, I'm sure both elements have their respective supporters. If you are pondering should you catch the film (freshly out in the theaters this weekend) you really only have to ask yourself a simple question: Do you enjoy the first film and if yes, why? Chloe Grace Moretz’s awesome portrayal of Hit Girl? The pseudo-realistic depiction of what a real-life superhero would be like? The crude humor and/or violent action sequences?

One thing we do know: If you are like Jim Carrey (who joined the cast as Colonel Stars and Stripes, the leader of Justice Forever) who announced via his Twitter account that "in all good conscience", he "cannot support that level of violence" and thus has decided not to promote the film following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, this is most probably not for you.

For those who are still keen to catch the sequel to Matthew Vaughn's 2010 superhero action comedy based on the comic book series of the same name, do rejoice in the fact that while the violence will no doubt be curbed in the live-action adaptation, all signs are pointing to an even more faithful adaptation than the previous film. With Vaughn moving on from the director helm in the sequel, new director Jeff Wadlow is elevating the scale of the sequel.

With Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kick-Ass and Chloe Grace Moretz’s Hit Girl inspiring a new wave of masked superheroes taking on the crusade, Justice Forever, a rag-tag team of laughable superheroes, were formed. At the other corner, Christopher Mintz-Plasse's Chris D'Amico AKA Red Mist in the first film, has gone to the furthest end at the dark side, transforming himself into a supervillain with one hell of a namesake: The Mother Fucker. With The Mother Fucker assembling a team of masked supervillains, the stage for a showdown as the stakes are higher than ever before.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2.  After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol.  When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave.  With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.  Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own.  With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets,  the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad.  But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

Featuring returning cast with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse reprising their roles with new members Jim Carrey, Morris Chestnut, , Donald Faison, Clark Duke, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo, and Olga Kurkulina rounding up the cast, Kick-Ass 2 is currently in fine theaters everywhere.
