Gravity: Final Preview

Posted by The Daily Zombies Sunday, October 6, 2013

Hot off the overwhelmingly positive reception and early Oscar buzz, The Daily Zombies takes a final look at Gravity, the upcoming sci-fi film by acclaimed Mexican film-maker Alfonso Cuarón.

For those who remained indifferent to the overwhelmingly positive response and early Oscar buzz that Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón's latest film, received after its premiere at 70th Venice International Film Festival, here's a little something that might just change your mind.

James Cameron, a name that needs no introduction in both sci-fi and the film industry, has this to say in an interview with Variety after checking out the film:

“I was stunned, absolutely floored. I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.

What is interesting is the human dimension. Alfonso and Sandra working together to create an absolutely seamless portrayal of a woman fighting for her life in zero gravity.”

So there you have it, the Hollywood juggernaut himself calling the film, "The Best Space Film Ever Done". Now if that isn't saying something for the much-anticipated film, I am hard-pressed to find something else to entice any avid film-lovers or casual cinema-goers further.

In our First Look at Gravity, we knocked around our ideas on how the film is easily one of 2013's most anticipated sci-fi films with an original concept right alongside Neill Blomkamp's Elysium and Guillermo Del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, and even back then we knew that this is one that clearly is something above and beyond the class of the two earlier-mentioned films. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, the Mexican film-maker who brought us the critically acclaimed 2006 dystopian sci-fi film, Children of Men, we had our first breathtaking look at the terror of being adrift in spac. The unrelenting vision of Cuarón instantly invoked as we follow the two protagonists Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as things gradually fall apart in space as the terrifying sense of helplessness and solitary deepened.

We have been rather disappointed at this year's films in general and are hopeful that a clear contender for the film of the year might just emerge this weekend. The Daily Zombies' movie-going advice of the week: Go watch Gravity in IMAX.

Easily considered some of the very best that we have seen all years, the trailers for the film are solid when it comes to enticing audiences into the cinema to witness the stunning visual effects. Here are the trailers released thus far.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Gravity is now available at all fine theaters.
