Machete Kills: Final Preview

Posted by The Daily Zombies Thursday, October 10, 2013

Robert Rodriguez is back with yet another balls-to-the-walls, ultra-violent action exploitation film in Machete Kills. The Daily Zombies takes a final look at the star-studded sequel to Rodriguez's 2010 film. Your mileage may vary.

As far as balls-to-the-walls, ultra-violent action exploitation film goes, Robert Rodriguez's Machete easily took the cake back when it was released in 2010 to much fanfare. To take you back to its intriguing inception, the film was an expansion of the fake trailer that Rodriguez made for Grindhouse, his 2007 collaboration with fellow cinema enthusiast Quentin Tarantino. Featuring remarkably bad-ass character actor Danny Trejo in his first leading role as the title character, the film took on an surreal turn when the cast was revealed to feature an all-star roster: Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Rose McGowan, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal and Robert DeNiro. Nevertheless, the film was deemed to be a flop, especially given its stellar cast.

And yet here we are with the sequel and a planned sequel known as Machete Kills Again... In Space! Continuing the film's trend for star-studded cast, Machete Kills again exemplify the need for stunt-casting typical of Rodriguez's usual Modus Operandi. Yes that means everything from batshit crazy choices such as Charlie Sheen (credited in his original name of Carlos Estévez) as the President of the United States, Mel Gibson as the insane Bond villian archetype, Luther Voz, Sofía Vergara as the Woman with the Gun-Rack, Madame Desdemona, to Lady Gaga's turn as La Chameleón.

Just so that you got the point about this one by now already, this will be a B movie that will actually be proud of its heritage and have no qualms in stretching out its exploitative muscles. Ask yourself if you would like something of the sort and you should be able to have your very own answer on this one.

And now, we take a last look at the film ahead of its release with the final trailers, red band nonetheless.

The latest batches of posters from the film.

And here some of the official images released thus far.

Here's the official synopsis of the film:

The second film in the Machete trilogy finds Machete mourning the loss of his beloved Sartana, slain during a run in with the cartels. Machete is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a cartel leader, Mendez the Madman, who threatens to fire a missile on the US. Machete foils Mendez's plot only to find that the missiles are remote wired to and triggered by the madman’s still beating heart. The only man who can disarm the missile is eccentric billionaire arms dealer, Luther Voz, who has hatched a plan of his own to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on Voz and his army in order dismantle his master plan for global anarchy.

And from the official press release, a more subtle synopsis:

Open Road Films will release MACHETE KILLS – directed by Robert Rodriguez (Machete, Sin City, Spy Kids franchise) and starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson – on Septmber 13, 2013.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez from a screenplay by Kyle Ward and based on a story by Marcel Rodriguez and Robert Rodríguez, MACHETE KILLS is the sequel to the 2010 hit film MACHETE - which has built a devoted legion of fans since its release – and is the second film in a trilogy.  The film is produced by Robert Rodriguez, along with Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic through their QuickDraw Productions banner, as well as Sergei Bespalov of Aldamisa Films, Alexander Rodnyansky of AR Films, and Rick Schwartz of Overnight Films.

In MACHETE KILLS, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.

Machete Kills is currently scheduled to open on October 11th, 2013.
