The astonishing run of The Simpsons' couch gags takes an Unexpected Journey in an extended parody on The Hobbit.

The Simpsons' "Couch Gag" opening sequences has been a proud long-running tradition of the First Family of Fox since its inception more than two decades ago. We have seen literally hundreds of different iterations of the sequence as diverse as a look on the evolution of mankind to a soul-searing commentary on outsourced labour, worker exploitation, and human rights condition in third world countries with a heightened sense of self-referential humor. In fact, just last month, we were once again awestruck by the "Couch Gag" with auteur film-maker Guillermo del Toro's astounding couch-gag opening for the latest Treehouse of Horror special of The Simpsons.

For the "Couch Gag" for the episode "Four Regrettings and a Funeral", the Simpsons took on an Unexpected Journey in the Middle-earth in a parody of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit with Marge leading the clan as Gandalf the Grey. Hit the jump to check out the awesome clip.

Here are some scenes from the awesome opening sequence.
