Penny Dreadful: First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by The Daily Zombies Monday, December 23, 2013

This Undead Monday, we take a First Look at Penny Dreadful, the upcoming "psychosexual" horror TV series created for Showtime by John Logan and executive produced by Logan and Sam Mendes.

For the uninformed (and thanks to the almighty Wikipedia), a Penny Dreadful, also known as penny horrible and penny awful amongst its many other names, is a type of British fiction publication in the 19th Century that usually featured lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks, each part costing one penny. It is well known as form of entertainment aimed primarily at working class adolescents and printed on cheap pulp paper.

And there you have it, the first prototype of "Pulp Fiction". And the title of a much-anticipated TV series from Showtime that ambitiously aims to weave together the origins of horror icons the likes of Count Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and Dorian Gray, as they find themselves in Victorian London, the best in any eras to feature the classic monsters. Created and written by John Logan with Logan's fellow collaborator from Skyfall, director Sam Mendes himself serving as the Executive Producer of the series, Penny Dreadful boasts a stellar cast spearheaded by Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, and Billie Piper. Set to premiere in Spring 2014, the first season will be consisted of eight episodes.

Without further ado, hit the jump to check out the subtle yet effective teaser trailer featuring Eva Green.

Here's the official synopsis for the series:

Some of literature's most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula –are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.

Penny Dreadful is set to premiere in Spring 2014.
