The Simpsons Pays Homage to Hayao Miyazaki

Posted by The Daily Zombies Sunday, January 12, 2014

The longest-running American sitcom pays tribute to the master of the animation game himself, Hayao Miyazaki, in the only and best way they can.

With animation legend Hayao Miyazaki announcing his official retirement with his final film, The Wind Rises (incidentally our Anime of the Year 2013), many creators have recently pronounced their admiration and respect for the true visionary in animation. Joining the chorus of homage to the master, this Sunday's episode of The Simpsons will feature a hallucinatory sequence conjured to pay tribute to Miyazaki.

In the scene, Homer and a regular Japanese salaryman are stumbling through the streets complete with an incredible parade of characters and nods from Miyazaki's astounding body of work. From Otto's appearance as the cat-bus from My Neighbor Totoro, the Kwik-E-Mart transforming into Howl's Moving Castle, to No-Face, the lonely spirit from Spirited Away, it takes more than a pair of keen eyes to spot the massive references. Thankfully, Slate has put together a clip that annotates these awesome references.
