Best of Super Bowl XLVIII Commercials

Posted by The Daily Zombies Wednesday, February 5, 2014

The Big Game has come and gone. And with the propaganda machine working at its annual pinnacle to unleash an unstoppable onslaught on the regular consumer's heart and mind, The Daily Zombies round up some of our favorite commercials (apart from the movie trailers) from the three hours block of commercials interrupted by football.

With Super Bowl XLVIII behind us now, we are more than confident that the game results aren't exactly what everyone is talking about the night after. Yes, apart from people babbling about how awesome Captain America: The Winter Soldier or The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is shaping up to be, the most watched and most expensive (4.5 million per ad this year) commercial airtime of the year is known for its three hours of commercials. After all, Super Bowl commercials are by now a cultural phenomenon on its own with many tuning in just to check out the commercials.

And for those people who did precisely that, we here at The Daily Zombies can reassure you that there is nothing wrong at all for doing that. If you have been a longtime follower of The Daily Zombies and have always wondered what this Commercial Suicide tag is all about, today is our best opportunity to display our love for awesome commercials. With a good number of associates of The Daily Zombies being deeply entrenched in graphic and advertising, we are unabashedly big fans of the art of commercial propaganda, an artform when done right.

With that, we bring to you what we thought were some of the very best commercials from the much-coveted airtime. Unsurprisingly, these commercials are dominated by beers and cars. From Terry Crews screwing around with the Muppets,  British villains threesome - Tom Hiddleston, Mark Strong, and Ben Kingsley flexing their villainous muscles, to Scarlett Johansson... well, being Scarlett Johansson, hit the jump to check out our round-up of cool commercials aired during the Big Game.

Audi: Doberhuahua

AXE Peace: Make Love, Not War

Bud Light: Ian Up For Whatever Film

Beats Music: The recently-released app with Ellen DeGeneres.

An alternate cut of the ad shown on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Budweiser: Puppy Love

Doritos: Time Machine

Ford: Nearly Double

Hyundai Genesis: Dad’s Sixth Sense

Jaguar: British Villains 'Rendezvous'

Jamie Casino, Injury Attorney: Casino's Law

Apart from the rocking theme from Nick Nolan, this is actually the most unintentionally funny commercial of the entire airtime.

KIA: The Truth
By the way, damn that Morpheus is now a big fat sell-out.

Microsoft: Empowering

Radio Shack: The Phone Call

SodaStream: Sorry, Coke and Pepsi

For the uninformed, this particular commercial was rejected by CBS for its digs at Coke and Pepsi, and was edited to avoid the rejection. And for the record, we find it necessary to give kudos to Johansson for braving through the controversy behind the media storm as a result of the commercial and sticking to her guts by resigning her ambassador role with humanitarian group Oxfam over her involvement with the Israel-based SodaStream and her stance to "support trade and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine".

Toyota Highlander: Terry Crews and the Muppets

Volkswagen: Wings

As we approaches the end of this article, it is interesting to note that one of the coolest and smartest commercials coming out of the Big Game is actually one that never got the budget to make its way into the 4.5 million club to air its planned commercial and walked away banking on that particular fact. Going viral to rant about how they have an excellent plan to conjure the best commercial ever for the Big Game, Newcastle Brown Ale also cleverly pulled in fan-favorite actress Anna Kendrick to further bitch about how she never get to have the chance to star (remarkably in an almost nude appearance) in the commercial.

So, yes we have a winner this year, and what an unconventional winner this is.

And for those interested in checking out what other commercials were rejected for the right reasons (too sexy, or too politically-charged, apparently), check out the following clip put together by one samuel ezerzer.
