From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series - First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by The Daily Zombies Monday, February 3, 2014

This Undead Monday, we take a look at El Rey Network's From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series as Robert Rodriguez adapts his 1996 cult film for the television screen on his television network.

With Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network swinging into full motion with a slew of programming from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman's Matador to the official launch of Mexican lucha libre from Asistencia Asesoría y Administración courtesy of Mark Burnett, we knew we are in for some unusual TV fun time with the network spearheaded by the prolific and irreverent film-maker. Well-aware of the fact that he would need a breakout series to catch enough attention to the new network, Rodriguez tapped into an old source to pull off a potential winner that might just turn the tide in his favor in this glorious golden age of television.

In 1996, Robert Rodriguez collaborated with none other than Quentin Tarantino (who wrote the screenplay) to make an unusual crime/horror hybrid of a film, From Dusk Till Dawn. The film opened with muted box office results despite mostly positive critical reception and has since went on to a cult film status. Personally, the film is like most other Rodriguez films: Fun, memorable but hardly meaningful enough to make it on the top film list (with the exception of Sin City, but I have to credit that to the source material). For his upcoming TV network, Rodriguez himself take on his old cult film once more to roll out a flagship series for his network: From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series.

With D.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz filling into the roles of George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino's Gecko brothers (Seth, and psychotic Ritchie), the series sought to explore and expand the characters from the original film with Robert Patrick taking on the role of Jacob Fuller (the ex-pastor played by Harvey Keitel) and Eiza Gonzalez as the vampire icon made famous by Salma Hayek, Santanico Pandemonium. Rodriguez himself directed the first two episode of the ten-episode first season that is set to premiere on 11th March.

Here’s the official synopsis of the series:

Based on the thrill-ride film, “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” is a supernatural crime saga centered around bank robber, Seth Gecko (Cotrona) and his violent, unpredictable brother, Richard “Richie” Gecko (Holtz), who are wanted by the FBI and Texas Rangers Earl McGraw (Johnson) and Freddie Gonzalez (Garcia) after a bank heist left several people dead. While on an escape route to Mexico, Seth and Richie encounter former minister Jacob Fuller and his family who they take hostage. Using the family RV to make a run for the Mexican border, chaos ensues when the group detours to a strip club that is unknowingly populated by vampires, and forces them to fight until dawn in order to get out alive. The series deepens the tone of the film, adds new characters and backstories and expands the Mesoamerican mythology behind the vampires.

The series features D.J. Cotrona (Dear John, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) who plays Seth Gecko; Zane Holtz (Holes, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as Richie Gecko; Jesse Garcia (Quinceañera, Sons of Anarchy) who plays Texas Ranger Freddie Gonzalez, a new character created for the series; Don Johnson (Django Unchained, Nash Bridges) who joins in a recurring role as Sheriff Earl McGraw; Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The X-Files) as Jacob Fuller; Madison Davenport (Save Me, Shameless) as Kate Fuller; Brandon Soo Hoo (Tropic Thunder, Ender’s Game, Incredible Crew) as Scott Fuller and Eiza González (Lola: Érase Una Vez) as Santánico Pandemonium, and Wilmer Valderrama (That 70’s Show) as Carlos.

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is currently scheduled to premiere on 11th March.
