The Babadook: First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by The Daily Zombies Monday, February 10, 2014

This Undead Monday, prepare yourself for a new breed of Australian horror: The Babadook.

In The Babadook, an Australian horror film directed by Jennifer Kent which has earned critical acclaim with its premiere at this year' Sundance Film Festival, an original horror is born.

And like most other thoughtful horror film, the eponymous creature in question, The Babadook, is of course more than just another random monstrosity. In a semi-tribute to Dark Water, the family ties is the crux of the entire film with the mother facing what the monstrosity actually represents in the film: A dark symbol of guilt and unspeakable impulse. With the film gaining tremendous momentum from its Sundance trip, it might just catch on internationally.

Hit the jump to check out the creepy trailer which is unfortunately laced with spoilers.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.
