Constantine: First Look

Welcome back, John. Meet Hellblazer himself as remarkably portrayed by Matt Ryan in NBC's upcoming live-action adaptation of one of Vertigo's most beloved series.

"I'm the one who steps from the shadows, all trenchcoat and cigarette and arrogance, ready to deal with the madness. Oh, I've got it all sewn up. I can save you. If it takes the last drop of your blood, I'll drive your demons away. I'll kick them in the bollocks and spit on them when they're down and then I'll be gone back into darkness, leaving only a nod and a wink and a wisecrack. I walk my path alone... who would walk with me?"

While it remained true that Keanu Reeves' Americanized John Constantine back in 2005's Constantine pretty much left a sour taste for everyone that any plans for another live-action take of one of Vertigo's most beloved characters immediately garnered negative opinions, it appears that we could be on the verge of an awesome rendition of the comic book series thanks to NBC and David S. Goyer.

With the casting of British actor Matt Ryan in the titular role announced earlier last month, the first official image of Ryan in character has been released. And we have all the reasons in the world to be hopeful of this latest take on the occult detective: A true-blue British character with blonde hair and classic trenchcoat portrayed exactly this way. Without further ado, hit the jump to check out the image.

Strangely, Ryan exudes a little vibe of CM Punk with that smug look.

Here's the press release from NBC:

As production begins on the new pilot CONSTANTINE — from executive producers Daniel Cerone & David S. Goyer and director Neil Marshall — NBC, Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment are today releasing the first official image of series star Matt Ryan in character as John Constantine.

  • “I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers. Fans old and new are going to be in for a treat,” said executive producer David S. Goyer.
  • CONSTANTINE follows enigmatic and irreverent Liverpool con-man-turned-occult-detective John Constantine, who is reluctantly thrust into the role of defending our world against dark forces from beyond.

Featured in hundreds of comic book issues, John Constantine has been a DC Comics staple since his first appearance as a supporting character in Swamp Thing in 1985. The character was subsequently featured in his own bestselling Hellblazer and Constantine comic book series.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew of the pilot have released official set images to raise awareness about safety on film sets at Slates for Sarah, a Facebook page dedicated to Sarah Jones, a camera assistant who passed away on set last month. Hit the jump to check out Ryan's take on the iconic character in these cool set images.
