Avengers & X-Men: AXIS - First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies Thursday, June 19, 2014

Marvel Zombies, brace yourself this October for the coming of the new Axis of Evil led by none other than Red Onslaught in the next earth-shattering Marvel Comics event, Avengers & X-Men: AXIS.

So what exactly is a Red Onslaught?

In summary, the clone of Red Skull who lobotomized the body of the late Professor X to fuse their brains together to gain the immense telepathic abilities of the late great Charles Xavier back in Uncanny Avengers #4, written by Rick Remender.

And here we are, at the dawn of yet another earth-shattering Marvel Comics event, Avengers & X-Men: AXIS. A nine-part event written by Remender with Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu, Terry Dodson, and Jim Cheung, the clone of Red Skull who has successfully fused his brains with Professor X is now back with the Omega-Level powers of Onslaught. If you need introduction to this Onslaught character, this might not be the right place for you to dwell though a quick Wikipedia trip can certainly explain to you on what these Omega-Level powers are all about. Nevertheless, our concerns here are the fact that story arcs with Onslaught as the main antagonist are almost singularly mediocre at best. Hopefully, with the irredeemable quality of evil from (the clone of) Red Skull, we can get to have some good ol' Marvel fun given the lackluster impact from the recent events from Age of Ultron, Infinity to Original Sin.

Here's the promotional art for the event.

Apparently, Red Onslaught will not be alone in his conquest as he assembles a new Axis of Evil with heavy hitters the likes of Dr. Doom and Loki, amongst other secondary-level villains like Sabretooth, Carnage, and Hobgoblin. Readers who have taken note of the original teaser image of the event on the cover of the August issue of the Previews Catalog would have notice the change of character here since Green Goblin has been replaced by Hobgoblin following the recent developments in the Spider-Man books.

In addition, with Red Skull's Nazi origin and given the fact that the new Axis of Evil will be set up at Genosha, it is expected that Magneto will be playing a big part in the arc taking on Red Onslaught. For the heroes, we understand that the previously rumored "I" in the AXIS ("A" being Avengers, and "X" being X-Men), the Inhumans, will also be featured heavily in the event, alongside Iron Man, Spider-Man, Havok, Hulk, and Scarlet Witch.

Entitled Red Supremacy, the Act 1 of the nine-part event is set to kick off in October while we expect more developments setting up the event via the upcoming issues of Uncanny Avengers. Apart from this, a number of official tie-ins coined "March to AXIS" will be taking place in the pages of Magneto, Loki: Agent of Asgard, Captain America, and of course, Uncanny Avengers.

Here's a preview of the cover of the first issue by Jim Cheung.

And here are the full details from the official press release:

This October, the Marvel Universe prepares for the biggest battle it’s ever faced –Marvel is proud to present the first details for Avengers & X-Men: AXIS! AXIS, the nine part blockbuster comic event of the fall, brought to you by the chart topping creative team of Rick Remender, Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu, Terry Dodson and Jim Cheung, will take fans across the globe as the Avengers and the X-Men must band together to stop the destruction caused by one of the greatest villains in the Marvel Universe!

From the ashes of the once proud mutant haven Genosha, an evil power rises. Exploiting the limitless gifts of the world’s greatest telepath Charles Xavier, the Red Skull has enslaved thousands, amassed an army and now broadcasts his message of hate across the world. Channeling the unstoppable force known as Onslaught, the Red Skull’s ruthless and unparalleled evil now wields a destructive power unmatched by even the most powerful heroes.

The fractured teams of Avengers and X-Men are now all that stands in the way of total obliteration. Earth’s last hope now hinges on the fragile alliance of these two estranged teams. In the shadows of the Red Supremacy, can they fight as one? Even united, they may not be enough to stem the coming darkness. And if they fall, all hope is lost.

The battle begins this October in Act I of Avengers & X-Men: AXIS but fans anxiously awaiting the explosive first issue can get their first teases in March to AXIS, special lead in stories setting the stage for the epic event! The March to AXIS begins this September in Uncanny Avengers #24, Captain America #24, Magneto #9 and Loki: Agent of Asgard #6!
