When Marnie Was There: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies Wednesday, July 2, 2014

Set to premiere on July 19th, Studio Ghibli is back with another awesome-looking anime feature film with an unconventional concept. With the release of the first trailer for the anime film, here's our First Look at When Marnie Was There.

While legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki may have truly retired with his brilliant last anime film, The Wind Rises, there is no doubt that Studio Ghibli lives on with Hiromasa Yonebayashi carrying on with the prestigious banner of one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world with his last anime film, The Secret World of Arrietty, getting rave reviews. Later this month, Yonebayashi is set to strike again with his new anime film, When Marnie Was There, 思い出のマーニー, literally "Marnie of Memories".

Based on the 1981 novel with the same name by Joan G. Robinson, the anime film focus on the unlikely tale of a lonely young girl who chanced upon the eponymous character who is very likely to be a ghost based on the plot synopsis of the original novel. With the anime film set to be released soon, Studio Ghibli  has released the first trailer to give us a very brief look at the film. While both the visual and music is as beautiful and moving as one would expect from the master animation studio, it is interesting to note that the plot of the film is closely secured with not even a hint of a plot revealed. Which is of course a very good given the how none of the major studios practices some form of nuanced control over their trailers. While there is no word yet on a likely US released, you can quench your thirst by checking out the moving trailer right below.

Noticed the subtly moving soundtrack at the background which is somehow perfectly apt for the anime film? The track, entitled "Fine on the Outside" is written and performed by American singer-songwriter Priscilla Ahn for the film. You can check out the entire track in the music video embedded below and just for the sake that you can check out the gorgeous and certainly very talented Ahn introducing her latest gig for Studio Ghibli, the clip can also be found right below.

And here’s the plot synopsis for the original novel:

Anna hasn't a friend in the world - until she meets Marnie among the sand dunes. But Marnie isn't all she seems...Sent away from her foster home one long, hot summer to a sleepy Norfolk village by the sea, Anna dreams her days away among the sandhills and marshes. She never expected to meet a friend like Marnie, someone who doesn't judge Anna for being ordinary and not-even-trying. But no sooner has Anna learned the loveliness of friendship than Marnie vanishes...

When Marnie Was There is currently scheduled to be released on July 19th, 2014.
