Automata: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies Wednesday, August 20, 2014

And along came a sci-fi film that was previously unknown at all to us but has by now totally piqued our undead interest. Yes, the good ol' man/robot thing is on full display in the first trailer of Automata, an upcoming film directed by Spanish film-maker Gabe Ibáñez.

The philosophical and ethical line of man and robot has always been one of our favorite peculiar trope given the fact that artificial intelligence is nowhere near that of most sci-fi literature. However, the theme has been immortalized by great materials in the genre from Blade Runner to Ghost in the Shell (not I, Robot, please). In fact, right in our immediate horizon, we will be exploring this particular trope in a major tentpole film, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

So it is to nobody's surprise that we are pleasantly caught unaware by Automata, a sci-fi film starring a bald Antonio Banderas and directed by Spanish film-maker Gabe Ibáñez. Based on the intriguing first trailer, Asimov's laws of robotics are certainly present and appeared to be interestingly challenged. Perhaps it is the lack of a reasonably good sci-fi film on robots, but we find this film right up our undead valley with its spot-on depiction of realistic robots.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Fast forward fifty years into the future, planet earth is in the midst of gradual desertification. Mankind struggles to survive as the environment deteriorates and the slow regression of the human race begins in AUTÓMATA. On the brink of life and the reality of death, technology combats the prevailing uncertainty and fear with the creation of the first quantum android, the Automata Pilgrim 7000. Designed to bring support to society's plight, man and robot reveal what it means to co-exist in a culture defined by human nature.

The descent of civilization is juxtaposed by the rise of ROC, the corporation at the helm of robotic intelligence. Despite the demise of humanity, the company has set forth security protocols to ensure mankind always maintains control over the manufactured population. As ROC insurance agent, Jacq Vaucan (Antonio Banderas) routinely investigates cases and complaints surrounding defective androids, he begins to uncover the secrets behind who is really manipulating the Automata Pilgrim 7000. Jacq's own suspicions propel the mystery— uncovering a truth that is far more complex than the make or model of any machine.

Automata is currently scheduled to premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September with an official release in October 2014.
