Daredevil: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies Saturday, October 11, 2014

At the New York Comic-Con, Netflix and Marvel Television unveiled the much-anticipated first glimpse at their upcoming 13-episode TV miniseries, Daredevil. The Daily Zombies takes a First Look at the show that will lead to a series of miniseries leading to The Defenders miniseries.

Marvel Studios has been pretty much unstoppable when it comes to their box office-stomping capabilities, but their television wing, Marvel Television has been surprisingly struggling despite the best efforts of their cinematic counterparts. For now, no one can say for certain that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be making a third season return although we must add that it is too early to speculate that.

Which brings us to the bigger picture here: Marvel Television, in collaboration with ABC Studios (for the uninformed, that's the television wing of Disney, the parent company of Marvel), will be producing a series of four 13-episode miniseries leading to a big one that will be the culmination of the entire project. Does that sound kind of familiar for you? Well, taking more than a page from their cinematic counterpart, Marvel Television and ABC will be releasing the miniseries exclusively via the streaming device Netflix, which means that you can opt for a good ol' fashioned binge-watching marathon lasting 13 hours. So what are in stores ahead? First up, Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones (that's the protagonist of the critically acclaimed comic book series, Alias, for the uninformed), Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Yes, you are counting four so the big one will be The Defenders, which at this time sounded like an "Avengers-style" gathering of the street-level superheroes. All of the above have been old news since it was first announced last year. And it is only until now that we get to have our first glimpse at the launch of the initiative, Daredevil, arguably the most anticipated of the lot.

At the recent New York Comic-Con (NYCC), Marvel Television took to the dedicated panel of the show to unveil the first images of the series while assembling the entire cast (with the exception of Rosario Dawson) at the panel of an intriguing discussion and some exclusive clips for those in attendance. Speak of the cast, Charlie Cox will be taking the lead of Matt Murdock, AKA The Man Without Fear, AKA Daredevil himself. Undoubtably making his ominous presence, Vincent D’Onofrio will be Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, an excellent casting since we are well aware of the terrifying air that D'Onofrio brings to his characters. Rounding up the cast are Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Scott Glenn as Stick, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Marianna (that's Mrs. Fisk for the uninformed), Vondie Curtis Hall as Ben Urich (investigative journalist for, no, not The Daily Bugle, but The New York Bulletin for copyrights issues), Bob Gunton as Leland Owlsley (that's the supervillain , The Owl, for the uninformed) and Toby Leonard Moore (Wesley, the second-in-command for The Kingpin's outfit).

For now, let's have our first look at Charlie Cox's dual identities, Matt Murdock by day, and Daredevil by night.

And before the fanboys implode into outcries, Marvel Television has make it a point in their official press release following the NYCC panel that the costume is based on the original image by Romita, Jr.'s work on Frank Miller's Daredevil: Man Without Fear (image below for your reference).

Does this means that similar to the comic book series, the costume will be undergoing radical changes and before we move to the classic red devil outfit, we will get to have a glimpse at the incredibly dorky brown-and-yellow get-up? We can't say for sure for now but one big question lingering above our collective undead heads is the setting of the show. Earlier reports have showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (creator of the Starz series, Spartacus) speaking freely about the 1970s feel of crime-ridden Hell's Kitchen:

“We’re going for a very gritty, 1970s New York feel for the ['Daredevil'] show. We love the idea of beauty in the decay of the city, and Hell’s Kitchen being a place that is both horrible and beautiful at the same time. That’s why Matt Murdock loves it so much and wants to protect it.”

But a good look at Matt Murdock's suave attorney outfit doesn't exactly translate into a 1970s vibe. Or is it a man's classic that is timeless? Well, only time will tell and the fact is we are already intrigued. For now, check out the concept art poster of the show conjured by none other than Joe Quesada himself, followed by some images taken during the NYCC panel.

Here’s the official synopsis for the series:

"Marvel's Daredevil" follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell's Kitchen, New York City.

Marvel's first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus," "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," "Angel") and Drew Goddard ("Cabin in the Woods," "Lost," "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," in addition to writing the first two episodes of "Marvel's Daredevil"), along with Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb ("Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Smallville," "Heroes").

"Marvel's Daredevil" is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

Starring Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Vincent D’Onofrio, Ayelet Zurer, Vondie Curtis Hall, Bob Gunton and Toby Leonard Moore, all episodes of Daredevil are expected to premiere in May 2015.
