A Charlie Brown Christmas by Nicolas Delort & Dark Hall Mansion

Posted by The Daily Zombies Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Last Halloween, we have checked out the astonishing rendition of It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown by artist Nicolas Delort and Dark Hall Mansion. Staying perfectly consistent with their ideas, brace yourself for A Charlie Brown Christmas come this festive season.

During the recent All Hallow's Eve, we have witnessed numerous graphic prints produced (or reproduced in many cases) to commemorate one of the favorite pseudo holidays of us here at The Daily Zombies. Of the countless lots, one particular piece caught our undead eyes for its unique treatment of the source material: French artist Nicolas Delort's awe-inspiring take on the classic 1966 Halloween television special based on the timeless comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, "It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown".

With the bells of Christmas ringing in, Dark Hall Mansion picked up where they left off on Halloween by announcing their latest project to chime in the spirits of the festive season. Set to be released on 25th November, Dark Hall Mansion collaborated with Delort once again, to take on yet another Charles Schulz holiday classic: A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Staying in tune with the earlier Halloween piece, Delort continued to impose his signature mesmerizing dark palette on this black-and-white piece that instantly conjure the nostalgic emotions of the classic 1965 television special.

As always, Blurppy has the exclusive coverage of the announcement and has spoke to Delort on the piece. Check out the an excerpt of the interview right below.

BLURPPY – “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is SUCH an iconic holiday special that I’d imagine it was a bit daunting to get it JUST right.  How hard was it for you to nail this one down?  How many versions did you go through before the final concept?

Nicolas Delort – I wanted to do Great Pumpkin and this one as a diptych of sorts right from the start and as soon as the Great Pumpkin sketch was approved, I had the idea for Charlie Brown Christmas.

Both share the “boy and his faith” theme but while Great Pumpkin is all about Linus’ optimism and hope, Charlie Brown Christmas is more about Charlie’s disappointment and resentment towards what the holiday has become…so I thought it’d be interested to make two illustrations that would work next to one another.

The challenge on this one was that the image was to be more “luminous” (for lack of a better word) than Great Pumpkin and my style is usually pretty dark, so I had the idea to set the scene in the tree selling place and surround Charlie with garish electric lights.

BLURPPY – This holiday special really takes me down memory lane with fond remembrances from my youth.  What about you?  Was this part of your childhood?  If so, what are your memories surrounding it?

Nicolas Delort – Actually, not really, we were always more of a Grinch family, hah.

BLURPPY – Ooooooo is that a tease?  Can we expect a GRINCH print from you!?  (Fingers are crossed!)  What do you think it is about this holiday classic that still resonates with fans around the globe?

Nicolas Delort – I think a lot of us can relate to Charlie’s complaints, even moreso nowadays, when you have Christmas-themed merchandise or decorations in stores as early as October. Sure, Charlie is kind of a downer, but he makes some good points, even if you’re not a religious person.

Do head over to Blurppy for the full article. There will be a total of three versions of the piece available for sale at a random on the morning of 25th November at Dark Hall Mansion's official store. For now, check out below for all three astonishing versions of “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.

Here are the details from the official press release:

PRNewswire/Dark Hall Mansion, www.DarkHallMansion.com, Dark Hall Mansion’s yearly holiday tradition continues with the timeless classic that’s informed Christmas and the holiday season for almost 50 years, Charles M. Schulz’s 1965 masterpiece, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,”
this year beautifully and evocatively rendered by artist, Nicolas Delort. Flawlessly written by Charles Schulz, beautifully directed and animated by Bill Melendez and team, and of course, brilliantly scored by Vince Guaraldi, this film, perhaps more than any other, quietly, humorously, and evocatively reminds us in poetic and lyrical fashion just what the true meaning of Christmas really is.

Dark Hall Mansion, under license from Peanuts Worldwide, takes us back to our collective memory of gathering about the TV while awaiting Christmas and the holidays and having Guaraldi’s first gentle jazz passages signal the season truly was upon us. Charles M. Schulz’s 1965 masterpiece is timeless, precisely because its profound emotional resonance is as relevant today as it will be in another fifty years and beyond. Artist Nicolas Delort, who brought such pathos to Dark Hall Mansion’s “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” again brings his distinctive and highly detailed style to bear rendering Charlie’s contemplation of the true meaning of Christmas a quiet and personal one.
