Frozen Fever: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Do you want to build an audience for what appears to be yet another tame and unnecessary live-action edition of a classic fairy tale? Money's already in the bank by inserting the animated short, Frozen Fever ahead of the film.

With Walt Disney Pictures rolling out what appears to be yet another tame and unnecessary live-action edition of a classic fairy tale in Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella next month, Disney is throwing down its gloves in the box office ring by inserting Frozen Fever, a seven-minute animated short continuing the stories of Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf from Frozen, ahead of the screening of Cinderella.

Yes, the very same Frozen that has become such a pop culture juggernaut at all front, dominating kids across the globe with its frozen charms. We all know this is going to be more than an enhancement to Branagh's live-action take on Cinderella, but it is interesting to note that both Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the directors duo of the original will be directing the short with Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, both Oscar-winning composers for the original, returning on board to write  another original song for the movie as well.

Featuring Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and Olaf (Josh Gad), Frozen Fever is about Anna's birthday with Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf scrambling to make it a big celebration until Elsa went down with a cold, and being the ice queen that she is, a cold is certainly as uncommon as they come.

Disney has released the first trailer for the animated short, giving us a glimpse at the film with the return of some other notable characters like Oaken (Chris Williams), the owner of Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Sauna, as well as Marshmallow, the snow monster conjured by Elsa in the original.

Check out the trailer right below for some heart-warming antics that bring you right back to Arendelle.

Featurette for the film.

Here are the official promo images released for the short.

Here's the official synopsis for the animated short:

In “Frozen Fever,” it’s Anna’s birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but when Elsa catches a cold, her powers may put more than just the party at risk.

Frozen Fever is set to debut in theaters with Walt Disney Pictures' Cinderella on March 13, 2015.

Batman: Arkham Knight - New Trailer & Images

Posted by The Daily Zombies

As we veer ever closer to the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, we take another look at Rocksteady Studios' swan song to the best-selling, critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham video game series with its recently-released new trailer and images.

As immortalised by Heath Ledger's iconic portrayal of The Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, the plan has always been that: "It's simple. We, uh, kill the Batman".

In the latest trailer to Batman: Arkham Knight, Scarecrow assembles the Rogues Gallery to wage an all-out war in Gotham in a final attempt to take out The Dark Knight once and for all. Entitled "Gotham is Mine", the very best (or worse depending how you look at it) of comics' greatest Rogues Gallery (seriously, bar none) unite with the likes of Two-Face, The Penguin, The Riddler, Harley Quinn, Firefly, as well as Arkham Knight (the brand new villain created for the title by notable DC Comics scribe Geoff Johns and DC co-publisher Jim Lee), join Scarecrow in a haunting finale to the epic conclusion of Rocksteady Studios' genre-defining trilogy of Batman: Arkham video game series (not including Warner Bros. Games Montreal's prequel title, Arkham Origins). For obvious reasons, the single most anticipated game of 2015 for us here at The Daily Zombies.

With no further ado, check out “Gotham is Mine” right below.

And here are some of the recently-released official images.

And here's the synopsis of the title:

In the explosive finale to the Arkham series, Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy The Dark Knight forever.

Batman: Arkham Knight introduces Rocksteady’s uniquely designed version of the Batmobile, which is drivable for the first time in the franchise. The addition of this legendary vehicle, combined with the acclaimed gameplay of the Batman Arkham series, offers gamers the ultimate and complete Batman experience as they tear through the streets and soar across the skyline of the entirety of Gotham City.

Be the Batman.

Batman: Arkham Knight is scheduled to be released worldwide in June 2, 2015, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.

WATCH Power/Rangers

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Fans of the Power Rangers, regardless if it's the Americanised Mighty Morphin version or the original Japanese tokusatsu Super Sentai? Brace yourself then for Power/Ranger, an ultra-dark R-rated short "bootleg" film brought to you by producer Adi Shankar.

Here at The Daily Zombies, we are obviously huge fans of Adi Shankar, the American film-maker who have in the past brought us high quality "bootleg" short films (such as The Punisher: Dirty Laundry with director Phul Joanou and Thomas Jane, Venom: Truth in Journalism with writer/director Joe Lynch and Ryan Kwanten, and the animated six-episode mini-series, Judge Dredd: Superfiend), having covered all of the above previously. But we might just be on the verge of the biggest and boldest bootleg short film produced by Shankar ever: Lo and behold, the ultra-dark R-rated version of the Power Rangers.

Produced by Shankar, directed by Joseph Kahn and featuring Katee Sackoff and James Van Der Beek, Power/Ranger came from Shankar's compelling realisation that the high school kids ("teenagers with attitude" as they called them in the Saban Entertainment's Mighty Morphin version) recruited to fight in an intergalactic war they have nothing to do with are literally "child soldiers" are going to have PTSD and living the "most fucked-up lives". Fair point. And we must add, even greater execution, after we check out the entire 14-minute short film. If you are still hesitating by this point on giving away fourteen minutes of your life you can't get back, check out this GIF to whet your appetite.

Dead yet? Then without further ado, check out Power/Ranger right below.

(Updated February 27: The video has since been taken down by YouTube earlier today. Find out how you can watch the video at the end of the article.)

(Updated February 28: Apparently, YouTube has brought back the video earlier today. So now you can still watch it below.)

The Vimeo version is the full NSFW version containing full-on nudity and violence. In another words, the version to check out.

And here's the full credit and synopsis:

Deboot of the Power Rangers. My take on the FAN FILM. Not a pilot, not a series, not for profit, strictly for exhibition. This is a bootleg experiment not affiliated or endorsed by Saban Entertainment or Lionsgate nor is it selling any product. I claim no rights to any of the characters (don't send me any money, not kickstarted, this film is free). This is the NSFW version. An alternate safe version is on youtube.

***For the record I wrote and posted this statement at release of this video, BEFORE it was pulled then reinstalled.***

The SFW YouTube version.

And here's a clip released simultaneously by Shankar entitled "Why Bootleg The Power Rangers" where Shankar explains precisely that. For the record, this is not a pitch.

And just so you know, Lionsgate Films is currently working on a new film adaptation of the material with the scheduled release date of July 22nd, 2016. And there is no chance in hell you will get to witness a grim and gritty approach to the Power Rangers.

For more on the short, you can check out Kahn's interview with Hitfix as he explains why this dark vision of the material can only work in this short, 14-minute format as opposed to a full-blown feature film.

Updated February 27

Apparently, Saban Entertainment is much less tolerant than Marvel. Given how Shankar has pulled off his earlier "bootleg" films, we were surprised to learn that YouTube has pulled the clips over a copyright claim from Saban. Details as presented by a perplexed Shankar below.

In an interview with Deadline, Kahn has the following to say:

“I think it’s a huge blow for fandom. I think they’re hurting themselves. I think with this short they’ve gotten more attention than ever before. How do you break the Internet with the Power Rangers? I think it gave them a lot of publicity and revived its pop culture awareness. Instead of supporting the good will of the fans, they’ve turned it into a legal issue. It doesn’t sound like they’re thinking of the fandom at all.”

Fortunately, Shankar finally managed to identify a source willing to host the clip to make it available for free online. All hail Facebook!

The following is the statement from Shankar and right at the end of it, you can find the link to check out the clip:

Today, I was deeply disappointed to learn that Saban Brands decided to attack my Power/Rangers “Bootleg Universe One-Shot” film.  To all the viewers that enjoyed this film, I consider this an outright infringement on freedom of expression and individualism. I set out to make this film because I am a childhood fan of the Power Rangers. As children our retinas are burned with iconic images and as we grow older these images come to represent crucial moments within the trajectories of our own lives.  This film is a homage to the original creators of the Power Rangers, and a parody of a television series we all grew up loving. Films like my Power/Rangers “Bootleg” are vital expressions of creativity in our troubled world. If we suppress this creativity and become passive participants in the consumption of the culture we live in, we implicitly allow a dangerous precedent to be set for the future of the internet.

Warm Regards,
Adi Shankar

P.S. Thank you Mark Zuckerberg for hosting Power/Rangers and taking a standhttps://www.facebook.com/theadishankarbrand

WATCH Big Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Orange Pants)

Posted by The Daily Zombies

No, no, no, Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman certainly won big last night at the 87th Academy Awards but we are talking about the hilarious Birdman parody featuring Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer who played Big Bird since 1969.

Last night at the 87th Academy Awards, Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman overcame its greatest nemesis in Richard Linklater's Boyhood and took home four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay. So without a shadow of a doubt, it was the Biggest winner in the entire awards season. But is it as big as the Big Bird?

Of course, we are talking about Sesame Street's resident eight-foot two-inch (249 cm) tall bright primrose-yellow bird, the one and only Big Bird performed by American puppeteer Caroll Spinney since 1969.

In Big Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Orange Pants), a hilarious yet thoroughly clever short parody of Birdman, Caroll Spinney is in the very same zen-like state of self-doubt like Michael Keaton in the film with visions of his influential big yellow alter ego speaking to him everywhere he go. Big Bird asks, "How did we get here? How do we get to Sesame Street?"

Well, we all know the answer to that last one. Check out the cool clip made in the exact faux one-take cinematography right below.

The Lazarus Effect: Final Preview - Undead Monday

Posted by The Daily Zombies

With The Lazarus Effect opening this weekend, we take a Final Look at the horror film with a new riff on 1990's Flatliners and starring Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, and Donald Glover this Undead Monday.

Set to be released this weekend by Relativity Studio, The Lazarus Effect is interestingly a throwback to the Joel Schumacher's 1990 horror thriller, Flatliner.

In Flatliner, we have a group of young medical students led by Kiefer Sutherland experimenting the after death and as fate (and horror film logic) would have it, this brilliant idea naturally led to disaster. Written by Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater and directed by David Gelb, The Lazarus Effect depicts the misadventures of a group of young medical students meddling with methods to bring the dead back to life. Just so you get our point.

Anyway, being a product of the Millennials, The Lazarus Effect is more than a throwback to a single 90s horror film. When one of the medical students is inadvertently electrocuted to death during the experiments, ever the brilliant human beings that these protagonists are, they revived her using the unproven and naturally unorthodox method. And any movie buffs will know by now that we are referring to 1989's Pet Sematary, where reviving the dead always comes with deadly consequences.

Now that you basically know how this will go down, perhaps the participation of Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover and Mark Duplass can entice you further for this horror film that generally have all the tropes in place.

If you are still in doubt over checking out The Lazarus Effect come this Friday, perhaps you can check out the following trailers and featurettes to see if it works for you.

The second trailer entitled "Phases".

Featurettes for the film.

Here's the poster for the film.

Here are the official promo images released for the film.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

THE LAZARUS EFFECT follows a group of researchers led by Frank (Mark Duplass) and his fiancée Zoe (Olivia Wilde,) who’ve achieved the unimaginable – bringing the dead back to life.  After a successful, yet unsanctioned, trial on a newly deceased animal, the team is ready to unveil their breakthrough to the world. When the dean of their university learns of their underground experiments, their project is unexpectedly shut down and their materials confiscated.

Frank, Zoe and their team (Donald Glover, Sarah Bolger and Evan Peters) take matters into their own hands, launching a rogue attempt to recreate their experiment, during which things go terribly wrong and one of their own, Zoe, is horrifically killed. Fueled by terror and grief, Frank pushes them to do the unthinkable: attempt to resurrect their first human test subject.

Initially, the procedure appears a success, but the team soon realizes something is wrong with Zoe. As her strange new persona reveals itself, the team quickly becomes stuck in a gruesome reality. They are no longer faced with the question of whether they can bring someone back to life- but rather, the wrath of her return.

The Lazarus Effect is slated to open on February 27, 2015.

WATCH Fingers Bloody Fingers starring Tommy Iommi of Black Sabbath

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Brace yourself for the secret origins of Heavy Metal itself with this awe-inspiring animated short film conjured by VH1 Classic to commemorate the 67th birthday of Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.

Last Thursday (19th February) marked the 67th birthday of Anthony Frank "Tony" Iommi, the lead guitarist of Black Sabbath who is well-regarded by most music historians and metalheads everywhere as one of the founding fathers of Heavy Metal itself. To commemorate the event, VH1 Classic conjured an animated short entailing the tragic industrial accident that motivated Iommi to his legendary career and in a nutshell, created Heavy Metal.

While the tale behind Iommi's baptism of fire is pretty much one of the most famous parables amongst music historians and metalheads, the animated short aptly entitled "Fingers Bloody Fingers" is a cool animation complete with the narration of Iommi himself. As the first part of VH1's new online animated series entitled "The Complete History of Heavy Metal", check out the clip right below.

And if you are having streaming issues with the VH1 clip, here's the YouTube version of the clip.

Mad Max: Fury Road - International Trailer & New Image

Posted by The Daily Zombies

It is no secret that we were gleefully stunned by what we witnessed in the first full trailer of Mad Max: Fury Road. Here to give us more of the same (though still noticeably different), an international trailer for the Japanese market has been released.

Released late December, the first trailer of George Miller's upcoming post-apocalyptic sci-fi action thriller, Mad Max: Fury Road totally run us all over with its sheer awesomeness. earning our collective appreciation so much that we called it the Trailer of the Year 2014. In a year where we saw the release of amazing trailer releases for the likes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age of Ultron, this certainly is no small feat.

Here to rekindle our admiration and anticipation for Miller's return to the franchise he created following a hiatus of almost three decades, an International trailer for the Japanese market has been released. Essentially the same batshit insanely awesome trailer but significantly shorter with a fair bit of new footage, Japanese subtitles, it is interesting to note that in an earlier interview with Hero Complex during last year's Warner Bros. Pictures' Comic-Con panel, Miller paraphrased the inimitable Alfred Hitchcock and mentioned how he wanted Fury Road to be understood in Japan without the use of subtitles.

Check out the trailer below and see if you can comprehend the plot without any aid of audio (or even better, if you are Japanese, see if you can follow without looking at the subtitles).

Here's a new official image that was released recently.

And here's the official synopsis for the film:

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

“Mad Max: Fury Road”—the fourth in the franchise’s history—stars Tom Hardy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) in the title role, alongside Oscar winner Charlize Theron (“Monster,” “Prometheus”) as the Imperator, Furiosa. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult (“X-Men: Days of Future Past”) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (“Mad Max”, “Sleeping Beauty”) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (“Conan the Barbarian”) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoë Kravitz (“Divergent”) plays Toast, Riley Keough (“Magic Mike”) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior. The cast is rounded out by well-known Australian actors John Howard and Richard Carter, supermodel Megan Gale, Angus Sampson, Joy Smithers, Gillian Jones, Melissa Jaffer and Melita Jurisic.

Mad Max: Fury Road is currently scheduled to open on May 15, 2015.
