Unfriended: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies Saturday, February 14, 2015

This Valentine's Day, we embraced ourselves with some fitting horror courtesy of Unfriended, the upcoming found footage horror film conceived and produced by Timur Bekmambetov and blessed with one hell of a novelty concept which allows its trailer some pretty awesome treatments.

No jetpack. No floating skateboard. We are now living in a time of warring social medias and information explosion with the continued advancement of the social network and technology crawling inwards rather than outwards with the NASA project in the dust. But what's truly important (and scary at that) is the fact that pretty much everyone is fine with that. Connectivity is now part of the survival plan if mankind endeavors to move on.

Along came Unfriended, an upcoming supernatural horror film conceived and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, the Kazakh film-maker who previously brought us the Night Watch films, the live-action adaptation of Mark Millar's Wanted, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Quite the fantasy/horror/action cinematic body of work, we must agree. But the point here is really the high concept of the film previously known under its working title of Offline and originally had its world premiere at the 2014 Fantasia Festival as Cybernatural.

Covering a very timely subject that you (since you are here reading this piece) will find to be uncomfortably realistic: Online bullying. Without a shadow of a doubt, we have seen irresponsible comments of all shapes and sizes all over the internet from those that are just flat-out dumbly obscene (or obscenely dumb) to those with misdirected political/racial agendas (you can check out this cool satire of the actual situation by the talented folks at Saturday Night Live for a good illustration of that). In the film, a high school girl was publicly shamed online when video footage of her drunk antics were anonymously posted. The internet name-calling campaign went viral and the victim takes her own life few days later in a video that was also posted online too. On the anniversary of her suicide, her old internet account was reactivated to infiltrate an online chat group filled with her old high school friends to determine who posted these videos. Of course, things go from bad to worse in the unknown intruder's quest for truth as the truth behind some of these friends are unveiled.

To add more intrigue to the film, Unfriended is presented in the noticeably overused found footage format, which means that the film will be hauntingly familiar for all internet dwellers going about their usual routine of online multi-tasking and casual reading/searching of noteworthy brain juices. Shaped to provide an intriguing look at the colossal damage of an unhinged social media attack, creep yourself out by checking out the trailer right below.

Here are the first posters of the film.

Here's the official synopsis of the film.

Ushering in a new era of horror, Universal Pictures’ Unfriended unfolds over a teenager’s computer screen as she and her friends are stalked by an unseen figure who seeks vengeance for a shaming video that led a vicious bully to kill herself a year earlier.

After Universal executives saw a test screening of Unfriended terrify a test audience, the studio acquired the thriller that was developed and conceived by visionary filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). Directed by Levan Gabriadze, Unfriended is written by Levan Gabriadze and produced by Bekmambetov and Greaves, as well as Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions (Ouija and Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious series).

Featuring Shelley Hennig, Moses Jacob Storm, Renee Olstead, Will Peltz, Jacob Wysocki, Courtney Halverson,Heather SossamanUnfriended is currently scheduled to be released on April 17th, 2015.
