Lucifer: First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by The Daily Zombies

As much as you dread the prospects of a television crime procedural adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Lucifer Morningstar, you get to have a first taste of how Fox's LAPD's latest DIABOLICAL consultant is like in this First Look at the TV series set to premiere in 2016.

Indeed, like many other self-respecting fans of either Neil Gaiman's original Sandman series or Mike Carey' spin-off series based on the very same depiction of the character, we here at The Daily Zombies are particular perturbed at the prospects of a television crime procedural take of one of our favourite depiction of The Devil himself ever.

But here we are, on this Undead Monday, with our first real glimpse at the upcoming TV series from Fox as Tom Ellis take on the impeccable role of Lucifer Morningstar. Like so many other actors before him from Al Pacino to Robert DeNiro to Elizabeth Hurley, can Ellis capture the effortless charisma of The Devil? Well, he certainly looked good in this one but we still have all our undead fingers all crossed with this one. Check it out yourself for a good look.

Here's the official synopsis for the new series:

The Devil has come to Los Angeles…Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, LUCIFER is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR (Tom Ellis, “Merlin”) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub. Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him – as well as his best friend and confidante, MAZIKEEN aka MAZE (Lesley-Ann Brandt, “The Librarians”), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective CHLOE DANCER (Lauren German, “Chicago Fire”), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it. As they work together to solve the pop star’s murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Accustomed to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, Lucifer is intrigued by Chloe’s apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel AMENADIEL (DB Woodside, “Suits,” “24”), has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld…can the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil?

Lucifer is currently scheduled to premiere on Fox in 2016.

Happy Mother's Day from Deadpool

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Happy Mother's Day and our favourite Merc with a Mouth from Marvel has some special message for all mothers and motherfuckers out there, courtesy of Ryan Reynolds.

The last time we checked out the live-action adaptation of our favorite Merc with a Mouth from Marvel, it was April's Fool Day but it certainly was no joke when Ryan Reynolds confirmed the rated-R status of the film set to be released on 12th February 2016 in incredible style (Fuck you Slater. Who can forget that?).

With today being Mother's Day, Deadpool is back to provide some much-needed/unnecessary special message to commemorate the occasion courtesy of Reynolds' Twitter account.

Just so you know, Deadpool is quickly shaping up to be one of our most anticipated films of 2016, which is an incredible feat when you consider the calibre of films set to release in the same year. And now, the image in its entirety.

For further look at the film the ever-social-active Reynolds has since provided us with more than a handful of images to the film, even giving us a first look at Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

And this typically tasteless (and odour-less) one.

Here's the official synopsis of the film.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Starring Ryan Reynolds as the eponymous character, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, and T. J. Miller, Deadpool is currently scheduled for release on 12th February 2016.

Captain America: Civil War - Official Synopsis & Cast Announced

Posted by The Daily Zombies

With Black Panther making his cinematic debut, the likely first appearance of an All-New, All-Different Spider-Man, and the live-action adaptation of one of the most beloved comic book storylines in Marvel Comics history, how big can Captain America: Civil War get? You have no idea. Until now.

With Avengers: Age of Ultron in our rear view mirror as we head towards July's Ant-Man, the de facto conclusion of Marvel Studios' box-office stomping Phase Two, we already knew that Phase Three is going to kick off with one hell of a bang. Apart from being the live-action adaptation of one of the most beloved comic book story arcs on recent history, the popular storyline will be depicting the all-out war between two groups of superheroes led respectively by fan-favorite Avengers (both cinematically and in the comic books),  Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark AKA Iron Man versus Chris Evans' Steve Rogers AKA Captain America. If that doesn't raise your enthusiasm in any ways, you probably shouldn't be here in the first place. And with Chadwick Boseman making his big screen debut as Black Panther, as well as the fact that we are pretty dead certain that the All-New, All-Different Marvel Studios/Sony-friendly Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man will be making his first-ever appearance in the film, there is simply no way that Captain America: Civil War can be even bigger than that. Until yesterday when Disney release an official press release announcing the beginning of principal photography for the third instalment of Captain America film series along with a most massive cast roll call.

Indeed, we can almost call the cast the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe on display with the obvious absence of Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Chris Hemworth's Thor. Before we look at the official press release, let's just look at the incredibly massive roll call itself:

  • Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
  • Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
  • Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier
  • Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon
  • Paul Bettany as The Vision
  • Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
  • Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine
  • Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch
  • Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man
  • Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther
  • Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13
  • Daniel Brühl (who accordingly revealed that he will be playing the role of Baron Helmut Zemo)
  • Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones
  • William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross
  • Martin Freeman (much-rumored to be playing Everett K. Ross)
Indeed, this is even more characters than Age of Ultron. Whoever has been calling this Avengers 2.5 is certainly not exaggerating the state of play here. We can certainly feel that Marvel Studios is giving Warner Bros. Pictures' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a run of their money.

While it is somewhat surprising that  Paul Rudd's Scott Lang AKA Ant-Man will be making his first collaborative appearance in the greater universe, it is William Hurt's appearance as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross that is the big surprise here since this is officially the first time Marvel Studios actually confirms the existence of their somewhat illegitimate child in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Also of note is the continued radio silence on the role of Daniel Brühl as the antagonist role of Baron Zemo. And of course, the official inclusion of Martin Freeman in the cast (thereby creating the fan fantasy of BBC's Sherlock meeting John when Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange meet whoever Freeman is playing) but not indicating his role.

With no further ado, here's the official press release in its entirety:

Principal Photography Begins in Atlanta

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” is produced by Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Patricia Whitcher, Nate Moore and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s creative team also includes director of photography Trent Opaloch (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Elysium”), production designer Owen Paterson (“Godzilla,” “Matrix”), and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”).

Based on the Marvel comic character first published in 1941, “Captain America: Civil War ” continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in  “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and the upcoming release schedule, which includes Marvel’s “Ant-Man” on July 17, 2015, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” on November 4, 2016, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” on May 5, 2017, and Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok,” on November 3, 2017.

Marvel Studios most recently continued its unprecedented success with the release of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on May 1, 2015. The film recorded the second biggest opening weekend of all time with a $191.3 million box office. It has also been the #1 release in every country where it has been released.

Here's the newly-released official synopsis of the film:

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Captain America: Civil War is currently scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016 in 3D and IMAX.

Sense8: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

From the impeccable creative minds of The Wachowskis, J. Michael Straczynski, and Grant Hill,  comes what could be the most ambitious television projects in a long while: Sense8 is set to launch at Netflix next month and we have our First Look at the high-concept sci-fi series with the release of its first trailer by Netflix.

Frankly, anytime The Wachowskis decide to take on the chores of creating a TV series is in and of itself, a must-watch television event. With their upcoming Netflix television project in collaboration with J. Michael Straczynski and Grant Hill, we got ourselves the most anticipated new television series of 2015. As we find ourselves comfortably tucked in the Golden Age of Television, our First Look at Sense8 still struck us as the bold new entry that might just take the Golden Age to a whole new level.

With the high concept of eight strangers living in disparate parts across the globe suddenly finding their minds irrevocably linked as they reborn as "Sensates" with a mysterious organization hellbent in their quest to capture or destroy them, Sense8 features an international cast with Naveen Andrews, Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Jamie Clayton, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Tina Desai, Doona Bae, Aml Ameen, Max Riemelt, and Darryl Hannah.

In an interview with Comic Book ResourcesStraczynski further explains the concept of the show:

"We started out at one point talking about how evolution involves creating ever greater circles of empathy: You belong to your family, then you belong to your tribe, then two tribes link up and now you have empathy for your people on this side of the river, and you’re against the people on the other side of the river... on and on through villages, cities, states and nations... So what if a more literal form of empathy could be triggered in eight individuals around the planet... who suddenly became mentally aware of each other, able to communicate as directly as if they were in the same room. How would they react? What would they do? ... What does it mean? And what would the world think about people with this ability? Would they embrace it, or hunt them down...? It would give us a perfect platform to do a show that was loaded with action, big ideas, some amazing stunts that no one’s done before, and play to a planetary audience."

Now that you get the idea that the title is a play on the word sensate, you can share our delight at the 12-episode series set to be launched on Netflix next month with its first trailer embedded right below.

Official images from the series.

Here's the official synopsis for the series:

From the unparalleled creative minds of The Wachowskis (“The Matrix” trilogy, “Cloud Atlas”) and J. Michael Straczynski (Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling ,” ”World War Z”), as well as Grant Hill (“The Matrix” trilogy, “Cloud Atlas”), Sense8 is a gripping story of eight people from around the world whose lives are suddenly and inexplicably connected in a fight for their own survival.

As with all Netflix original series, all 12 episodes of Sense8 will be made available upon its launch on June 5, exclusively on Netflix .

Watch Jack Black & Jimmy Fallon Take On Extreme’s “More Than Words”

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Extreme's 1990 slow rock classic ballad, More Than Words, is immortalised further courtesy of Tenacious D's Frontman Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon fitting in the roles of vocalist Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.

In 1990, Extreme, otherwise known as a Funk Metal band with hits such as "Play With Me" and "Get The Funk Out" (on that note, I will never ever forget how effective it was used in the post-opening of Ringo Lam's 1992 Hong Kong film Full Contact (俠盜高飛)) created slow rock ballad history with "More Than Words". Mind you, but most probably anyone not from the 90s era would be thinking that this song is all about the "action" since it's "more than words".

But if you are like us undead old folks here at The Daily Zombies, you would probably also regard the track as the classic slow rock ballad to remember. Until Jack Black from Tenacious D and Jimmy Fallon take the track on frame by frame and lyric by lyric.

An entertaining sight after all if you overlook those ultra-exaggerated looks from Black and Fallon.

And for comparison purpose, here's the original:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - New Images Unveiled

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Kylo Ren unmasked! May the Fourth Be with You, as J. J. Abrams and celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz unveiled more secrets of the most anticipated film of 2015, Star Wars Episode VII, courtesy of the June issue of Vanity Fair

May the 4th Be with You! Our Star Wars Day celebration continues thanks to J. J. Abrams and Disney, who have chosen this most timely opportunity to unveil some of the most guarded secrets of the long-awaited Episode VII, The Force Awakens. And if you are like us, who are usually impervious to even notice what the latest copy of Vanity Fair has in store, think again.

Indeed, featuring the work of celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, who traveled to London's Pinewood Studios for some very exclusive set photo-shoots that will certainly blew you away (including the awesome cover featuring series newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, as well as gold favorites Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca), the June issue of Vanity Fair is set to be available on newsstands on 7th May in New York and Los Angeles and nationally on 12th May.

First and foremost, Kylo Ren is unmasked!

And he is none other than Girls' Adam Driver, just like what the rumors said.

Next-generation bad guy Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) commands snowtroopers loyal to the evil First Order on the frozen plains of their secret base.

And we have to confessed that Driver does carry the dark presence well in that "Hoth-like" setting.

Next up, we finally have some information on Lupita Nyong’o and the character she is playing... And it's a Space Pirate! Maz Kanta will be entirely CGI and pictures of Nyong'o in screen capture motion performance were also released.

A small galaxy’s worth of tracking dots affixed to Lupita Nyong’o’s face allowed artists at Industrial Light & Magic to transform her into the C.G.I. character Maz Kanata.

For those die-hard Jar Jar Binks haters, this is something bloody important that we picked up over at iO9's coverage of the Vanity Fair' scoop:

During an effects review, while watching a sequence with spaceships flying low over a desert planet, J. J. Abrams, director of Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens, asks to pause the scene, and with a light pen draws a little squiggle on a sand dune. “I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks’s bones in the desert there,” Abrams says, to much laughter. “I’m serious! Only three people will notice, but they’ll love it.”

And last but not least, here's a featurette of the photo shoot by Vanity Fair.

Update: 5th May 2015 - Adding on to the pile of reveals courtesy of Vanity Fair, another intriguing unveiling has been made with Game of Thrones' very own Brienne of Tarth, actress Gwendoline Christie, taking on the role of what has since been affectionately coined as "Chrometrooper" by fans since first witnessing the character's ominous appearance in the second teaser trailer

Indeed, the new character has been confirmed to be Captain Phasma, a member of the diabolical First Order (the new organization replacing the Empire). A new major villain who happens to be a Stormtrooper, as well as a female? That's a huge win on so many level.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opens in theaters December 18, 2015. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan & Abrams, and features a cast including actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. The film is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk, and John Williams returns as the composer. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Episode VII in the Star Wars Saga.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is currently set to be released on 18 December 2015.

WATCH TIE Fighter on Star Wars Day

Posted by The Daily Zombies

May the Fourth Be with You, as we celebrate Star Wars Day by checking out animator/artist Paul Johnson's breathtakingly awesome TIE Fighter, a short animation done in the good ol' 80s style while giving the perspective from the Empire.

For the ultimate "geekasm"-filled goosebumps, look no further than the second teaser trailer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

"Chewie... we're home."

But for our annual heartfelt "May the 4th Be with You" greetings, we felt compelled to move past our undead obsession for the film that will reach us on right before Christmas (18th December). Yes, StarWars.com is already marking the occasion by making the entire Season One of Star Wars Rebels available to stream online for free. But right now, we make amends on something pretty freaking awesome that we have missed out months earlier by checking it out on this timely occasion.

Released online back in late March, TIE Fighter is a short animation done in the good ol' 80s style while giving the perspective from the Empire courtesy of the magical works of animator/artist Paul Johnson, who took four long years to complete this entirely fan-based yet utterly incredible homage. In the YouTube description, Johnson explains the short animated film:

What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that's all but vanished from Japan nowadays?
Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards.

Drawn and animated by yours truly over 4 years' worth of weekends, with music by the living guitar solo Zak Rahman and sound design by up and coming audio technician Joseph Leyva. Fans of Lucasarts' seminal 1994 TIE Fighter game may notice a few familiar sights and sounds. That “incoming missile” noise gives me horrible flashbacks to this day...

With no further ado, the film come fully equipped with awesome 80s-style anime artwork and an amazing soundtrack. And they are right below with the embedded link.

And with no further ado, check out the seven-minute animated short right below.

Here are some of the screenshots from the short animation.

The Stranger: First Look - Undead Monday

Posted by The Daily Zombies

This Undead Monday, we take a First Look at The Stranger. a horror film with what appears to be grisly fresh new take on the run-of-the-mill vampire film with Uruguayan writer-director Guilermo Amoedo at helm with Eli Roth in the producer chair.

In The Stranger, Uruguayan writer-director Guilermo Amoedo's debut English-language feature film shot in Chile, the good ol' "Stranger in a Strange Land" trope is put to intriguing effect when the titular character turned tout to be a particularly grisly journey that threatens to unleash a gritty blood bath to the small town.

First premiered at Fantastic Fest last fall to positive reception, The Stranger, which is produced by Eli Roth, is currently scheduled to be released in limited theaters stateside and On Demand come 12th June. Brace yourself for the gory trailer right below.

Here's the poster for the film.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

In this supernatural thriller, a mysterious man arrives in a small Canadian town seeking his wife, but his unwelcome presence and what he finds instead soon plunges the community into a bloodbath.

First premiered at Fantastic Fest last fall to positive reception, The Stranger, which is produced by Eli Roth, is currently scheduled to be released in limited theaters stateside and On Demand come 12th June.

Suicide Squad: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Taskforce X Assemble!

That may not be the right slogan, but you are certainly looking at the Suicide Squad, in the flesh with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn hitting the casting jackpot, courtesy of director David Ayer's latest stunt unveiling.

Late last month, the internet lost all shits (in an ill-informed negative way) when director David Ayer took to his Twitter account to unveil Jared Leto's The Joker to commemorate The Joker's 75th anniversary.

And now, at the verge of Marvel Studios' all-conquering success of Avengers: Age of Ultron at the box office, another superteam has assembled in the flesh, seemingly in defiance of Earth's Mightiest Heroes: DC Comics' notorious ensemble of some of its most deadliest villains/anti-heroes... Taskforce X assembled in the flesh, courtesy of Ayer's latest Twitter reveal.

And here's the image in higher resolution.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the obvious standout would be Margot Robbie's absolute spot-on rendition of Harley Quinn. For those only familiar with Harley from Batman: The Animated Series (where in the world have you been by the way?), this is how the former Doctor Harleen Quinzel appears in the current comic continuity.

Apart from this, we also appreciate Karen Fukuhara's extremely faithful take on Katana. And that's probably the end of the positive remarks we have for now. Mind you, we knew exactly how foolish it is to declare that the failure of a film based on an official first look image, and we are not going to judge. It is just that we find it rather funny that there seems to be more than a couple of zombies (two males, one female, you figure) in the team. Meanwhile, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang looked a bit off in that get-up while we can't even determine who Adam Beach is playing (rumor is that Slipknot).

And we are not even going to comment on the unnecessary outcry on how Will Smith's Deadshot is without a mask.

Update: Will Smith himself has posted the masked Deadshot on his Facebook subsequently.

If you ask me, i would say that's pretty much as "dead-on" as far as Deadshot is concerned.

In summary, all is not lost and we still see plenty hope in this one. After all, this film beat that cursed proposed Sinister Six film to the punch as the first supervillain team film ever.

Currently in production, Suicide Squad boasts an incredibly stacked cast with Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as The Joker. One of the two DC films releasing next year, Suicide Squad will be released on August 5, 2016.
