Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Jesse Eisenberg is Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And based on this menacing First Look reveal of the latest take on Superman's nemesis, we have no intention whatsoever to say otherwise.

The story thus far in our coverage of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: We have had our First Look at Ben Affleck's Batman and his trusty Batmobile as well as Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman last year, and was pleasantly astounded by the unveiling of Jason Momoa's Aquaman early this year. And it is only right for us to have a sneak preview of the good ol' villainy now.

Along came Entertainment Weekly to provide us our very First Look at Jesse Eisenberg's take on Lex Luthor. Indeed, many has debated over the casting of the acclaimed actor who many perceived as unsuitable as the Man of Steel's nemesis. And now, you can throw all those doubts out of the window with this gritty photo shoot of the character, courtesy of Clay Enos, Snyder's longtime partner.

Check out the image right below (click on it to view in hi-res).

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly,  Snyder has the following to say about his version of the character:

“He’s not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure, other than him being a captain of industry and one person to the world and another person to himself. And bald, of course.

Our Lex is disarming and he’s not fake. He says what he believes and he says what’s on his mind. If you can unravel the string and decipher what he means, it’s all there.”

A follow-up to Snyder's 2013 film Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice features returning stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane reprising their roles in the first film, while including Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, as well as Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, and Tao Okamoto. The film is set to release in theaters on 25th March 2016.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation - First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Your Mission, should you choose to accept it, is here. For the fifth time with Tom Cruise returning as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. And here's our First Look courtesy of the release of the debut trailer by Paramount Pictures.

Joining the incredibly long stream of tentpole films set to be released this year, we see yet another chapter for one of the most beloved action film franchises in recent decades (last counted as the 18th highest grossing film franchise of all time), the big screen adaptation of the long-running 60s/70s TV series of the same name, Mission: Impossible. Here at The Daily Zombies, we all love Brad Bird's take on the spy genre with Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and with Skydance Productions as well as J. J. Abrams producing, we are expecting another high octane, adrenaline run with the new film set to be released in July.

Freshly announced with the sub-title, Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible 5 is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who previously had quite a blast with Cruise in the underrated Jack Reacher. Reteaming Cruise with Ving RhamesSimon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner, with new comer Rebecca Ferguson joining the team, the IMF takes on a new evil organisation cursed with a truly niche title, The Syndicate. Accordingly, the organisation has a near-mythical reputation and boast a network of assassins and rogue operatives, functioning as a kind of anti-IMF consortium. So now we will get to see not one but two evil organisation this year with SPECTRE for the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre, and now The Syndicate. Also joining the cast, actor Sean Harris will be fronting The Syndicate with Alec Baldwin taking on the role of the Head of CIA (by default, a clownish role, we presume).

And if you are starting to harbour thoughts on how now that Tom Cruise is 52, we are getting less of those insane stunts from the actor in his fifth take on series protagonist Ethan Hunt, think again. In Ghost Protocol, we see Cruise challenge gravity scaling Dubai's Burj Khalifa, incidentally the world's tallest building. In Rogue Nation, Cruise actually managed to push the envelope on this one. If you check out the last moments of the trailer embedded below, you will see Cruise splinting down the wing of an Airbus A400 as it takes off... with no strings attached.

In an interview with USA Today, Cruise has the following to say:

“I’ve often sat on airplanes, looked out and thought, ‘What it would be like out there on the wing?’ … “That’s me the whole time. I was standing right over the tires when we landed. It’s nerve-racking for everyone else, but pretty exciting for me.”

And with no further ado, check out the first trailer right below.

Taking perfectly good use of Cruise's incredible stunt, here's the first poster for the film.

Official images recently-released to coincide with the release of the new trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

The new flick finds Hunt’s highly effective but destructive Impossible Mission Force (IMF) disbanded by vengeful Washington bureaucrats such as the CIA chief (played by Alec Baldwin). But Hunt pulls his team together (Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and newcomer Rebecca Ferguson) to battle the shadowy force known as “The Syndicate” and its elusive leader (Sean Harris).

Starring Tom CruiseVing RhamesSimon PeggJeremy RennerRebecca Ferguson, Sean HarrisSimon McBurney, and Alec Baldwin, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is set to be released in both IMAX and traditional theaters worldwide and in North America on July 31, 2015.

WATCH First and Final Frame

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Studious follower of the art of modern cinema rejoice with this awesome video clip conjured by Jacob T. Swinney that lined up the first and final frame of classic films side by side for an intriguing examination of the film-making craft.

What is the relation between the first and final shot of a film? Perhaps to the casual eyes, there are none and true to form in this current age of tentpole cinema, this is certainly the case. But for the studious follower of the art of modern cinema, there are still many film-makers out there with an eye for the thematic composition that can somehow pull off the magical sense of cinema by either retaining, contrasting, progressing or declining the two very important frames of a film.

In First and Final Frame, Jacob T. Swinney conjured an awe-inspiring video clip lining up the opening and closing shots of films side by side for an intriguing examination of the film-making craft. From classic films the likes of Taxi Driver and The Godfather Part II, to contemporary classics such as The Usual Suspects and Brokeback Mountain to recent classics like Whiplash, Birdman, and Boyhood, the clip gave us an unprecedented look at these beloved films.

With no further ado, check out the clip below followed by the official description of the clip.

What can we learn by examining only the first and final shot of a film? This video plays the opening and closing shots of 55 films side-by-side. Some of the opening shots are strikingly similar to the final shots, while others are vastly different--both serving a purpose in communicating various themes. Some show progress, some show decline, and some are simply impactful images used to begin and end a film.

Hotel Transylvania 2: First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

The Drac Pack is back as we take another trip to Transylvania courtesy of renowned animation creator Genndy Tartakovsky in the sequel to his 2012 animated hit, Hotel Transylvania

While it is most unfortunate that Genndy Tartakovsky, one of our favorite animators around on the sheer efforts of one of the most amazing animation series, Cartoon Network' Samurai Jack, has parted way with his 3D take on Popeye the Sailor Man, we can yet take solace that his other animated feature, the sequel to his 2012 animated hit, Hotel Transylvania, will be hitting the cinema later this year.

Here to remind us of that fact in this incredibly crowded year for potential blockbuster films (animated or not), Sony Pictures Animation has released the first trailer of the film that will also feature the return of Adam Sandler as the voice of Dracula. Adding on to the original cast, veteran comedian Mel Brooks will be joining the film as Vlad, Dracula's father and grandfather to Mavis (Selena Gomez).

Check out the first trailer of the animated film right below.

First images from the animated film.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

The Drac pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure in Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2! Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania… Dracula’s rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny – and in for a major cultural shock of her own – “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. But little do they know that Drac’s grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood – and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania – things are going to get batty!

Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, Hotel Transylvania 2 will be featuring the voice cast of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Mel Brooks, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi and Fran Drescher. The animated film is currently scheduled to be released on September 25th, 2015.

Eyes Without A Face by Jason Edmiston & Mondo

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Exhibiting now at the Mondo Gallery, Mondo and artist Jason Edmiston present one of their most ambitious gallery shows yet with Eyes Without A Face. The Daily Zombies takes a look at some of the awesome pieces from the high concept gallery show.

Opened yesterday with an opening night reception at the Mondo Gallery in Austin, Texas, the latest gallery show from the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema proves to be quite the remarkable affair one would expect from Mondo and more importantly in this case, artist extraordinaire, Jason Edmiston.

The high art of Edminston is of course undoubtedly exceptional but in this solo show for Edmiston, the artist conjured more than 140 brand new portraits focused solely on the eyes of characters from all corners of the pop culture from comics, films, music, video games, and more. From the unrelenting stare of the one and only Batman, the pixilated glare of the bad-ass boss of NES's Punch-Out!!, Mike Tyson, to the profound gaze of Mister Ziggy Stardust himself, brace yourself as you gaze into the window to the soul of these pop culture icons.

Running from March 13th to April 4th, "Eyes Without A Face" will be on exhibition at the Mondo Gallery is located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, TX.

Here are the details from the official press release:

“EYES WITHOUT A FACE” WILL PROFILE THE WINDOW TO THE SOULS
OF BELOVED CHARACTERS, CREATURES AND MORE AT
MONDO’S NEXT GALLERY EVENT
The Gallery Show Will Feature a Stunning Collection of
Original Painted Works By Jason Edmiston
Austin, TX—February 2, 2014— Mondo presents “Eyes Without A Face,” the next gallery show, featuring artist Jason Edmiston and an eye-opening collection of original art based on 1:1 representations of some of pop culture’s most iconic peepers. The show will kick off with an opening night reception, open to the public, on March 13 from 7 – 10pm and will run during regular hours until April 4. Mondo Gallery is located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, TX.

“Eyes Without A Face” will feature approximately 150 portraits of eyes culled together from film, music, comics, video games, toys and more. Each piece will be presented at a 1:1 ratio – from tiny plastic toy people, humanoid actors, to giant beasts and more. The concept allowed Edmiston to curate a wide spectrum of characters for the gallery in a way that made thematic sense. Part of the fun will be trying to figure out all 150 characters at the show.

Discussing the genesis of the show’s concept Edmiston said, “I had the idea for the show when I was working on my last solo exhibition for Mondo Gallery. I was driving around town with my wife bouncing concepts off of her. I checked my rear view and had the idea. The shape of the mirror made me think of just using a tight cropping of eyes for the basis of a show. I also kind of wanted to see what it would feel like to be in a gallery surrounded by eyes staring at you. It should be quite an experience to stand in the center of the gallery and slowly rotate 360 degrees, creating a feeling of being watched by your heroes.”

Edmiston has become well known and highly sought after for his eye-popping and colorful acrylic paintings of pop culture figures. His most jaw-dropping pieces, like The Hand of Ming, have always been incredibly expressive and successful in drawing out the emotion of the character. “Eyes Without A Face” is allowing Edmiston to hone in the eyes, the most expressive part of any body – real or imagined.

For more info on Jason Edmiston, visit his official site.

Now gaze into the windows to the soul of some of the coolest characters in pop culture history for a preview of the stunning show.

Eyes Without A Face is currently running at the Mondo Gallery in Austin, TX, till April 4th.

R. I. P. Terry Pratchett (1948 – 2015)

Posted by The Daily Zombies

AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER. The Daily Zombies bid farewell to one of the most intelligent and funniest minds of this generation, Sir Terry Pratchett.

It is truly a sad day here at The Daily Zombies as we bid farewell to one of the sharpest minds in literature of our generation today. Fare thee well, Sir Terry Pratchett.

The author behind the much-beloved Discworld fantasy novels, among other bestselling books, Pratchett has gathered quite the remarkable legacy for his signature writing style of incredibly funny yet utterly clever satire of the fantasy genre.  With a 41st addition completed last year, Pratchett is easy best known for his prolific comic fantasy series, Discworld, while his 1990 collaboration with fellow British writer Neil Gaiman, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, is also one of his most acclaimed works.

Appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998 and knighted for services to literature in 2009, Pratchett first announced that he was suffering from Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) back in 2007. Following the completion of the 41st volume of Discworld in the Summer of 2014 and leaving his proudest legacy in the good hands of his daughter, Rhianna Pratchett, a notable fantasy writer in the video game industry, Pratchett succumbed to the final stage of the disease on 12th March at the age of 66.

True to the writer's satirical nature, Pratchett's last set of tweets were both heartbreakingly forewarning of his demise yet absolutely in line with his sardonic humor, complete with a cameo by Death from the Discworld series (for the uninformed, Death speaks in block capitals in the series):

Here are the heartbreaking details from the official press release of Transworld Publishers

It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce that author Sir Terry Pratchett has died at the age of 66.

Larry Finlay, MD at Transworld Publishers: “I was deeply saddened to learn that Sir Terry Pratchett has died. The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds.
In over 70 books, Terry enriched the planet like few before him. As all who read him know, Discworld was his vehicle to satirize this world: he did so brilliantly, with great skill, enormous humour and constant invention.
Terry faced his Alzheimer’s disease (an ‘embuggerance’, as he called it) publicly and bravely. Over the last few years, it was his writing that sustained him. His legacy will endure for decades to come.
My sympathies go out to Terry’s wife Lyn, their daughter Rhianna, to his close friend Rob Wilkins, and to all closest to him.”
Terry passed away in his home, with his cat sleeping on his bed surrounded by his family on 12th March 2015. Diagnosed with PCA in 2007, he battled the progressive disease with his trademark determination and creativity, and continued to write. He completed his last book, a new Discworld novel, in the summer of 2014, before succumbing to the final stages of the disease.
A Just Giving page donating to the Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE) has been set up in his memory: http://www.justgiving.com/Terry-Pratchett

There have been so many visitors to the Terry Pratchett website and forum since Thursday's desperately sad news, and as a result the website has crashed.  Normal service will resume as soon as possible. In the meantime, please do visit his Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Pratchett where readers from across the world are sharing their thoughts.

Watch Robert Downey Jr. Delivers Bionic Arm to a 7-Year-Old Boy

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Delivering a brand new 3D-printed bionic Iron Man arm to a 7-year-old boy who was born with a partially developed right arm while promoting the good cause that is Albert Manero's Limbitless Solutions? Now that's a Superior Iron Man.

Lo and behold, your feel-good video of the day (if not week).

In a truly superheroic act, Robert Downey Jr. collaborated with Albert Manero, a superhero in his very own right, and his volunteer group, Limbitless Solutions. A Fulbright scholar and doctoral student in mechanical engineering at the University of Central Florida, Manero founded Limbitless Solutions in an inspiring ongoing effort to building and donating low-cost 3D-printed bionic limbs for children. Everybody would have seen a bionic arm by now, but I can bet with anyone that you usually only get to see it on TV news where some experimental bionic arms are tested by handicapped war veterans. A good reason behind this would be the incredibly high cost of a bionic limbs, a challenge that has been conquered by Manero, using the 3D printing technology. A usual bionic arm that can cost $40,000 is now for the low cost of $300. In this time and age of redundant invention and the lack of truly innovative properties being developed, it is indeed inspiring to see how technology can aid those who are in need.

After learning about the volunteer group and Alex, a 7-year-old boy who adores superheroes and born with a partially developed right arm, Downey Jr. jumped into action to present Alex with his new arm, complete with some heartwarming Iron Fist bump moments between the two.

Here's what Downey Jr. have to say about the project, via his Facebook:

Special thanks to Albert Manero, OneNote, and #CollectiveProject for their work making artificial limbs like this more affordable for families with kids who want to show the playground how badass they are. Check out http://www.facebook.com/LimbitlessSolutionsto learn more about this incredible project. #goodcause

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck - First Look

Posted by The Daily Zombies

Before the premiere of Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck on HBO in May, we have our First Look at the critically acclaimed documentary film on Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain with the release of its haunting trailer.

Premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim, director Brett Morgen's documentary film, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, is no doubt an attention-grabber given the iconic status of its subject: Kurt Cobain, the Seattle Grunge Music Icon who infamously shot himself to death at the peak of his career at the delicate age of 27.

Given Cobain's legendary status during his time as the frontman of Nirvana, the appeal of Morgen's documentary got one hell of a boost when Courtney Love, the widow of Cobain, show up to provide Morgen with previously-undisclosed home movie footage of Cobain and Love's private lives, along with unprecedented access to Cobain's unreleased audio recordings, artwork, and journals. In completing a holistic look at the often-frustrated music icon, Morgen also interviewed Cobain's parents as well as Nirvana drummer Kris Novoselic (no, no Dave Grohl), resulting in one of the most intimate look in a documentary of a late musician. Complementing the overall ambience of the documentary, Morgen also tapped on the animated mights of animators Stefan Nadelman and Hisko Hulsing to illustrate some of the more intimate moments of Cobain's personal life.

With all that, it is interesting to note that what appears to be the most heartbreaking and revelatory are the home movie footage featuring the lives of Cobain and Love, specifically right after the birth of their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. For those who either do not know Cobain or Nirvana or even lived in the 90s, you may not get to comprehend the documentary but the trailer will still most certainly leave you something to chew on. Check it out right below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies UK.

Here are the first official image released for the documentary, featuring the animated sequence.

The first posters for the documentary.

Here's the official synopsis for the documentary:

From acclaimed director Brett Morgen, this first ever, fully authorised documentary feature blends Cobain’s personal archive of art, written word, music (both his most famous and some that’s never been heard), and never –before-seen home movies, with animation and revelatory interviews from his family and closest confidantes.

Following Kurt from his earliest years in Aberdeen, WA, through the height of his fame, it creates an intense and powerful cinematic insight into an artist who craved the spotlight even as he rejected the trappings of fame,
Those of Kurt’s generation will learn things about him they never knew. Those who’ve discovered the man and his music more recently will understand what makes Kurt the lasting icon that he is.

Just like the legendary frontman of Nirvana himself, COBAIN: Montage of Heck is authentic, visceral and unflinching. It will get into your head and stay there long after the end credits roll.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is set to be released in UK theaters on April 10t, before making its domestic premiere on HBO on May 4th.
