The Girl in the Spider's Web: First Look

Lisbeth Salander returns on the big screen to kick down misogyny and patriarchy with Claire Foy taking over the role from Rooney Mara in The Girl in the Spider's Web.

The history behind Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Álvarez's upcoming film, The Girl in the Spider's Web, could prove to be a little more confusing than it should be. Generally known for his 2013 Evil Dead remake, Álvarezwe took on quite the tall order with a film meant to be a cinematic sequel to a David Fincher film. Yes, we are talking about 2011's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a film that I would personally hold in higher regard had I not seen Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev's cinematic trilogy covering Swedish writer Stieg Larsson's original Millennium trilogy of novels starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace. Based on the simple fact that both Nyqvist and Rapace found their respective career bloomed following the film (Nyqvist was an unforgettable antagonist in John Wick while Rapace faced off the first Alien in Ridley Scott's Prometheus), the impact of the Oplev's cinematic take on the original Millennium trilogy is undeniable.

It is most unfortunate that Larson succumbed to a heart attack in 2004, before the posthumous publishing of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2005, The Girl Who Played with Fire in 2006, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest in 2007, rounding up the original trilogy of the Millennium series which were originally designed to have ten installments. With the blessing of Larson's estate, Swedish author and crime journalist David Lagercrantz was commisioned to continue the Millennium series with his first novel in the series, The Girl in the Spider's Web, published in 2015, and another installment, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye, in 2017.

Now here we are in full circle, as Sony decided eventually to not pick up the thread with Fincher's critically acclaimed 2011 take, and hitting the touchy soft reboot/sequel button to have Álvarez take on The Girl in the Spider's Web with British actress Claire Foy taking over the role from Rooney Mara.

Judging from the first trailer, this proved to be an exciting run continuing the incredibly dark misadventures of one of the most intriguing female protagonists in recent cinematic history. That opening right there is an exemplary display of an awesome entrance of a character. Check out the trailer right below.

The first poster released for the film.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, will return to the screen in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a first-time adaptation of the recent global bestseller written by David Lagercrantz.  Golden Globe winner Claire Foy, the star of “The Crown,” will play the outcast vigilante defender under the direction of Fede Alvarez, the director of 2016’s breakout thriller Don’t Breathe; the screenplay adaptation is by Steven Knight and Fede Alvarez & Jay Basu.

The Girl in the Spider's Web is currently scheduled to be released November 9, 2018.
